Prime Video Cancels Ride or Die After a No. 1 Summer

Prime Video cut Ride or Die, a three-week global No. 1, while renewing YA series that opened with fewer U.S. views.

Prime Video canceled Ride or Die after one season, a 96% critic hit that led the streamer’s global chart for three weeks. Paramount Television Studios is shopping the Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer spy comedy to other buyers after the September 19, 2026, decision.

The same service has already ordered more episodes of Elle, Off Campus, and Every Year After, three YA titles that opened with smaller two-day U.S. view counts on Luminate. Ride or Die follows best friends Debbie Claybourne and Judith Burton, who go on the run after a hit goes wrong and Debbie learns Judith is an assassin.

Ride or Die Outdrew the Shows Prime Kept

Luminate’s two-day U.S. snapshot is the cleanest public comparison, because each of these Prime series dropped a full season at once. Ride or Die logged 927,000 U.S. views in its first two days, twice Elle’s 477,000, almost four times Off Campus’s 245,000, and more than four times Every Year After’s 217,000. Elle, Off Campus, Every Year After, and Sterling Point all have second seasons. Ride or Die does not, at least not on Prime Video.

TWO-DAY U.S. VIEWS VERSUS RENEWAL

Series Two-day U.S. views Second season on Prime
Ride or Die 927,000 Canceled
Elle 477,000 Renewed
Off Campus 245,000 Renewed
Every Year After 217,000 Renewed

The gap held after the opening weekend. In its first full Luminate week, Ride or Die reached 3.85 million U.S. views, doubling Elle’s 2.03 million over a comparable stretch and almost tripling Off Campus’s 1.42 million. In week 3 it still had 2.57 million, ahead of Elle’s 1.05 million and Off Campus’s 1.4 million. Rotten Tomatoes has season 1 at 96 percent from critics and 85% from audiences. Metacritic’s separate weighted tally is a 72 Metascore from 16 reviews, listed as generally favorable.

869 Million Minutes on the Nielsen Chart

Nielsen’s weekly streaming originals list, which counts minutes rather than Luminate’s views, put the show in the national Top 10 as soon as a full week cleared. It debuted at No. 8 overall and No. 3 among originals with 869 million minutes. In week 2 it rose to No. 4 overall and No. 2 among originals with 922 million minutes.

THE GLOBAL RUN ON PRIME VIDEO

  • Weeks at No. 1: Ride or Die was Prime Video’s most-watched original worldwide for its first three weeks.
  • YA comparison: Elle held that global slot for two weeks, and Off Campus held it for five; both were renewed.
  • Still charting: By September 19, more than two months after the July 15 premiere, it remained in the weekly global Top 10, most recently at No. 8.
  • Year window: Over its first 14 days it was Prime Video’s most-watched new scripted series in the U.S. from July 30, 2025, to July 29, 2026.

Completion, the share of the season viewers actually finish, was described by people involved as sitting in the same range as Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Scarpetta, and Elle, three Prime series that got more episodes. A No. 1 launch did not function as a renewal lock. Prime treated a three-week global chart-topper as disposable once the title was filed next to shows built to pull younger members.

Why Amazon Did Not Need Those Viewers

Prime Video has not issued a public explanation. The marketing split is not a secret. Amazon’s summer money sat on Obsession Is In Session, the YA push around Elle, Off Campus, Every Year After, and Sterling Point, with billboards, a fan event, and a trailer parked on the Prime Video home page. Ride or Die got a high-profile spot in the World Cup final and still won the two-day Luminate race.

People briefed on the talks have pointed to the show’s core audience. Ride or Die is a “white wine thriller,” industry shorthand for adult female leads, with Waddingham as Judith and Spencer as Debbie, two friends past 50. The series did cross over to men and younger viewers. The working account inside the company is that many middle-aged women already pay for Prime to shop, so a hit with them does not add members the way a book-club YA series can.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The decision: Prime Video opted not to renew after one season, a move that surprised the people who made the show.
  • The budget: People involved say the season came in under budget, which removes cost overruns as an easy excuse.
  • The slate around it: Elle, Off Campus, Every Year After, and Sterling Point were all picked up.
  • The studio: Paramount Television Studios, the lead studio, is shopping a second season to other buyers.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • The real cause: No Amazon executive has said on the record that age or subscriber math killed the pickup.
  • A new home: Paramount has not named a streamer or network in talks.
  • Internal metrics: Amazon’s own completion and acquisition figures have not been released.

Off Campus’s five weeks at global No. 1 is the fair counter to the two-day view gap, and it still fails as a full explanation, because Elle held No. 1 for only two weeks and was renewed anyway. The pattern tracks genre and target age more than it tracks the public charts.

Spencer’s Weekend Note After the Cancellation

Spencer, who also executive produced through Orit Entertainment, posted after the news landed on a Saturday. She joked that it was a decent weekend to be sick, then thanked Skydance and Paramount for three years of support, named Matt Thunell, and called out creator Tessa Coates and Jen Salke.

Apparently, THIS was the best weekend for me to get sick because, well, distractions! I hope every creative out there gets to have the incredible experience that I’ve had bringing this project to life with the unwavering support from Skydance/Paramount these past three years. Matt Thunell, Dana, Shelley, and Blair thank you. Barbara and Double Dream thank you! Projects like this shouldn’t be the exception, they should be rule! For all the women out there who felt seen, laughed out loud, lived out loud with Debbie and Judith, thank you. This was a fun one! Thank you Tessa Coates! Massive thank you to you, Jen Salke! You’ve always had exquisite taste!

Abbott Elementary’s Lisa Ann Walter wrote in the comments, “They’re insane. Biggest hit prime has had in a minute.” Halloweentown’s Kimberly J. Brown called the news mind blowing and said the show had better find another home because she wants a season 2. Waddingham, who plays Judith and is also an executive producer, has not posted a public reply of her own.

Spencer’s note is gratitude, not a campaign. The line that will travel is the one about projects like this being the rule, aimed at the women who recognized Debbie and Judith. That is the audience Amazon’s briefing notes appear to have discounted.

Paramount Is Shopping a Show It Inherited

Ride or Die did not start as a Paramount show. Tessa Coates created it, Matt Miller is the showrunner, and Peyton Reed directed early episodes. Amazon MGM Studios co-produced with Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s Double Dream and Spencer’s company. Skydance Television developed it first. After Skydance Media’s combination with Paramount Global, Paramount Television Studios took over as lead studio. Prime Video still had to say yes to a second season. It said no, which leaves Paramount selling a series whose first run already exists on a rival app.

FROM PITCH TO SHOPPING

  1. December 2023: Spencer and Waddingham are attached as stars and producers.
  2. June 8, 2026: Prime Video releases the trailer and key art, and sets a global launch in more than 240 countries and territories.
  3. July 15, 2026: The all eight episodes on July 15 drop at once on Prime Video.
  4. September 19, 2026: Prime Video opts not to renew; Paramount Television Studios begins shopping the series.

The supporting cast includes Ed Skrein, Calam Lynch, Savannah Steyn, Jamie Parker, Jacky Ido, Sylvia Hoeks, and Bill Nighy as The Director. Two in-demand leads make the shopping window short. A buyer has to land both women and a price Amazon already walked away from.

What Season 1 Left Hanging for a Second Run

Season 1 is not a closed book. People who worked on it say the finale planted several storylines meant for a second installment, which is why the pickup delay already felt like a warning. The plot is a road trip across Europe, with law enforcement, assassins, and criminals in pursuit, and the last hour does not send Debbie and Judith into quiet retirement.

THREADS LEFT OPEN

  • The run: The pair are still moving, still being followed, when the season ends.
  • The Agency: Judith’s employer remains standing, with unfinished business around the people who trained her.
  • Debbie’s next act: Her marriage and her work life are both in motion rather than resolved.
  • The shop: Younger support players are positioned to keep investigating the organization that built Judith.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus says the show revels in the friendship between Spencer and Waddingham and gets its fun from that pairing. A second season would have to keep that engine while paying off the chase. Without a buyer, those threads stay on Prime Video as a finished-looking season that was built to continue.

Peacock Kept the Other Friendship Series

Ride or Die was not the only 50-something female friendship series to land in July. Peacock’s The Five Star Weekend, with Jennifer Garner, Chloe Sevigny, and Regina Hall, launched on July 9, six days earlier. It became Peacock’s top scripted title on launch, and Peacock renewed it. Two shows about long friendships among women in that age band hit at once, and they did not seem to steal each other’s audience. One streamer kept its hit. The other sent its hit to market.

That split is the whole cancellation. Prime Video still has the eight episodes. Paramount still has to find someone who wants the women Amazon decided it already had.
