EA Closes BioWare and Cancels the Next Mass Effect

Seventy-eight days after a $55 billion take-private, EA closed BioWare’s Edmonton remnant and ended the next Mass Effect, leaving the IP with no in-house studio.

Electronic Arts closed BioWare on October 21, 2026, and ended early work on the next Mass Effect, 78 days after a $55 billion sale. A person familiar with the plans said about 50 Edmonton jobs were among about 400 cuts, about 3 percent of staff.

The staff letter did not describe a full RPG factory in collapse. It described a small team on early development, then said the Edmonton workspace would close with it.

The New Owners Closed a Small Edmonton RPG Team

The call sat with people who had owned Electronic Arts for less than a season. On August 4, 2026, the publisher completed its acquisition by PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners, and stockholders received $210 in cash per share.

The consortium had struck the deal on September 29, 2025. Stockholders approved it on December 22, 2025. In fiscal year 2026, EA posted GAAP net revenue of about $7.5 billion. Chairman and CEO Andrew Wilson said the new partners would “invest boldly.” PIF deputy governor Turqi Alnowaiser pointed to sports, gaming franchises, and “iconic IP.”

Mass Effect is that kind of IP. The next game still was not far enough along, in the new owners’ math, to keep a Canadian studio open.

THE CUT, IN PLAIN FIGURES

  • The sale: A $55 billion take-private closed on August 4, 2026, at $210 a share.
  • The gap: 78 days passed before EA announced BioWare’s closure on October 21, 2026.
  • The jobs: About 400 cuts company-wide, about 3 percent of staff, including about 50 at BioWare, per a person familiar with the plans.
  • The work: EA said a small BioWare team was in early development on Mass Effect, then chose not to continue.

Silver Lake managing partner Egon Durban talked at closing about AI in game development and player experience. Jared Kushner, chief executive of Affinity Partners, talked about new audiences. None of those closing remarks named Edmonton, Commander Shepard, or a six-year tease that never left pre-production.

Sports, Shooters and Iron Man Keep Their Budgets

Chief operating officer David Tinson and chief studios officer Cam Weber told staff they had spent months looking hard at the business. They set three aims: deepen the core franchises, reach more players on new platforms and in new markets, and build new sports products. Then they sorted the slate.

WHAT EA SAID IT WILL FUND

Project or group October 21 decision
Next Mass Effect at BioWare Ended in early development; studio and Edmonton office close
The Sims, Project Lotus Paused
The Sims, Project Evergreen Kept, with more time
skate. Kept, on a smaller team
Battlefield and Apex Legends Kept; Apex due for new modes
Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi Kept as the two big action-adventure launches
Respawn and DICE joint project Kept as a future collaboration
EA Sports, including Project Gridiron and Fight Night Kept; Fight Night in pre-production

Weber and Tinson wrote that action-adventure is high-stakes and that EA would put its “full weight” behind fewer of those games at once. They also wrote that they were closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace because they would not move forward with Mass Effect. They called BioWare legendary. They did not offer the project to Respawn, DICE, or anyone else in the letter.

Battlefield 6, they said, was “a great success.” FC stays funded. A social open-world football project, Project Gridiron, is in the works. Fight Night is coming back. That is the business the buyout was built to feed. A slow single-player RPG with no ship date was not.

Fifty People Were Still on the Mass Effect File

The studio that died on October 21 was already a remnant. On January 29, 2025, general manager Gary McKay said that after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, a core team at BioWare is developing the next Mass Effect and that the project did not need the full studio. He named veterans from the original trilogy: Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley, and others. Many colleagues, he said, had been matched to other EA teams.

McKay called the result a more agile studio that would still make RPGs. Twenty-one months later the agile studio was gone.

Co-founder Trent Oster, now chief executive of Beamdog, told CBC Radio it was “a pretty sad day.” He said that more than 30 years ago they built something he still thinks was pretty awesome, and that it was sad to see the end of the dream. During his years there, he said, the company grew from six people to 420.

We went from a bunch of clueless kids trying to make a game just for the hell of it to literally being the best in the world at what we did.

Trent Oster, BioWare co-founder, to CBC Radio

Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack, who calls Mass Effect his favourite series, said the video game industry is what it is today because of BioWare. He said the closure had nothing to do with Edmonton and everything to do with a corporate decision. Digital Alberta said it was ready to help affected workers, including people who want to start studios.

The people left on the file in 2026 were not 420. They were a small early-development group in a city that had already watched rounds of moves and cuts. Closing that group is a cheaper decision than killing a fully staffed ship, and it is the decision the new owners made.

A Six-Year Tease Never Left Early Development

Fans have been reading armor fragments since December 2020, when a Game Awards tease showed Liara T’Soni with a piece of N7 gear. Geoff Keighley, who worked on that tease, called the closure heartbreaking. Gamble thanked him and said he would always remember putting it together.

The project stayed in the early bucket the whole time Dragon Age was finishing, and it stayed there after the studio was shrunk to a core. EA’s October letter used the same phrase: early development.

HOW THE NEXT MASS EFFECT RAN OUT OF ROAD

  1. 1995: BioWare is founded in Edmonton.
  2. 2007: Electronic Arts buys the studio.
  3. December 2020: A Game Awards tease starts a nearly six-year wait for a new Mass Effect.
  4. January 29, 2025: McKay says a core veteran team is on the game and many other staff have moved inside EA.
  5. November 7, 2025: Gamble tells fans the next game is in development and the team is on Mass Effect only.
  6. August 4, 2026: EA goes private in the $55 billion sale.
  7. October 21, 2026: EA ends the project and closes the Edmonton workspace.

That timeline is the hidden cost of “focus.” After Veilguard shipped, BioWare was no longer trying to run two big RPGs at once. The company called that a reset. It also left a tiny team holding an expensive universe in a publisher that was about to take on private-equity math.

Gamble Spent N7 Day Telling Fans to Wait

Eleven months before the closure, on November 7, 2025, executive producer Mike Gamble used N7 Day to kill rumors. “Let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe,” he wrote. He said the last few years had been busy, and that the team was heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect.

He promised features, universe, and romances, and said it would be fun to show when they were ready. He asked for patience. On October 21, 2026, BioWare posted its last studio note and said early development on the next Mass Effect was ending.

The farewell listed Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Anthem. It said BioWare had been a home for storytellers and players, and that the immediate job was supporting the team. Gamble wrote that fan support had meant everything over 17 years at BioWare.

The loud argument after the post was that Veilguard killed the company, or that the people who made the old games had already left. Weber and Tinson never named Dragon Age in the letter. They named a small team and a choice to put money on sports, shooters, Iron Man, and Jedi. Both things can be true at once: the studio had been hollowed out, and the new owners still had to choose whether a leftover Mass Effect was worth an office in Edmonton. They chose no.

What Happens to Mass Effect Without BioWare?

EA has not assigned the next Mass Effect to another studio, has not put a ship date on a revival, and has not said the universe is done forever. The letter ends the BioWare version of the game. It leaves the license on the books of a company that just told staff to deepen FC, Apex, Battlefield, and a pair of licensed action games.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The game: Early development on the next Mass Effect ended on October 21, 2026, with BioWare.
  • The building: EA is closing the Edmonton workspace and is not moving that team onto the project elsewhere in the letter.
  • The date fans already had: N7 Day still falls on November 7, 16 days after the announcement.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • A new developer: No public plan names Respawn, DICE, or an outside studio as Mass Effect’s next home.
  • The Prime Video series: Gamble said in 2025 that BioWare had been working with Amazon on a show set after the original trilogy; EA’s October letter does not mention it, and neither EA nor Amazon put a new on-the-record status on the series with the closure.

N7 Day on November 7 will now arrive as a memorial, not a reveal window. EA said it would take questions at a global town hall in November. That meeting is for staff. It is not a Mass Effect showcase.

The useful remaining fact is colder than a fan campaign. Mass Effect still belongs to Electronic Arts. The people who knew how BioWare built those games are about to scatter, and the owners who just paid $210 a share did not keep a studio to hold them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Founded BioWare, and When?

Doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk founded BioWare in Edmonton in 1995, with Trent Oster among the early builders. Oster later ran Beamdog. The studio’s own farewell called the run more than 30 years and listed Baldur’s Gate through Anthem as the work that run produced.

When Did the First Mass Effect Game Come Out?

Mass Effect launched on November 20, 2007, the same year Electronic Arts bought BioWare. The series later added two numbered sequels, Mass Effect Andromeda in 2017, and the Legendary Edition rerelease of the original trilogy. Fans often called the canceled project Mass Effect 5; EA only ever described it as the next Mass Effect.

What Is N7 Day?

N7 Day is November 7, an annual fan and official date named for the Systems Alliance special-forces code in the games. Gamble’s November 7, 2025, blog used that date to say the next game was still in development. The next N7 Day is November 7, 2026, after the studio that hosted it has closed.

Did EA Move Mass Effect to Another Studio?

No. The October 21 staff letter says EA will not move forward with the development and is closing the Edmonton workspace. It names Iron Man, the next Jedi game, Battlefield, Apex Legends, and EA Sports as the work that continues. It does not name a receiving studio for Mass Effect.

What Was BioWare’s Last Released Game?

Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which shipped in 2024, was the last BioWare game to reach players. Anthem, the 2019 live-service shooter, is the other late-period title the studio included in its own goodbye list, beside the RPGs that made its name.

Weber and Tinson told staff they would support people who wanted other jobs inside EA. The letter still ends in the same place the buyout pointed: fewer long RPG bets, more sports and shooters, and a Mass Effect file with no studio attached.
