Magic’s $616 Million Quarter Now Runs Hasbro’s Profit
Magic: The Gathering’s first $616.1 million quarter supplied most of Hasbro’s profit, locking the toy company onto a set-and-license print schedule.
Magic: The Gathering took in $616.1 million in Hasbro’s third quarter, the first time the card game has cleared $600 million in three months. Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro games unit that houses Magic, posted $367.4 million in operating profit, 71% of the parent company’s $517.3 million.
Through nine months, Wizards booked $935.1 million of Hasbro’s $1,040.1 million in operating profit, about 90%. That share now decides how many Magic sets get printed and how many licensed worlds get turned into booster packs.
Wizards Now Supplies 71% of Hasbro’s Operating Profit
Hasbro’s third-quarter 2026 financial results, for the period ended September 27, show company revenue of $1,595.3 million, up 15% from $1,387.5 million a year earlier. Adjusted operating profit was $541.2 million, up 52% from $355.6 million. Reported net earnings were $2.77 per diluted share, and adjusted earnings were $2.90.
Chris Cocks, Hasbro’s chief executive, said the company delivered a fourth straight quarter of double-digit revenue growth and that Magic topped $600 million in quarterly revenue for the first time. Gina Goetter, chief financial officer and chief operating officer, said the mix, cost cuts, and tariff refunds of about $55 million supported the margin jump. The refunds are not a Magic story. $48 million landed in Consumer Products and $7 million in Wizards.
Q3 2026 SEGMENT RESULTS
| Segment | Revenue ($ million) | Operating profit ($ million) |
|---|---|---|
| Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming | 747.2 | 367.4 |
| Consumer Products | 827.9 | 173.8 |
| Entertainment | 20.2 | 17.1 |
| Hasbro total | 1,595.3 | 517.3 |
Corporate and other costs of $41.0 million sit under those lines and bring the three segments down to the $517.3 million company total. Wizards’ operating margin was 49.2%, up 520 basis points from 44.0%. Hasbro’s reported operating margin was 32.4%. Magic itself was $616.1 million of Wizards’ $747.2 million in sales, up 34% from $459.4 million a year earlier.
Tabletop gaming, the cardboard, rose 39% to $613.1 million. Digital and licensed gaming rose 3% to $134.1 million, including $41 million from Monopoly Go!. The profit engine is still a physical pack, not an app.
A Leaner Hobbit Set Still Ranked Fourth
Cocks said growth was broad, across new sets, backlist product, and Secret Lair. Two releases carried the quarter. The Hobbit arrived in August as a Universes Beyond set, Magic’s licensed-crossover line. Reality Fracture, an in-universe set, debuted in early October and, Cocks said, shipped ahead of Hasbro’s own plan.
MAGIC’S BACK HALF OF 2026
- August 2026: The Hobbit launches; Cocks calls it the fourth-best-selling set in Magic’s history, with a leaner product line than prior tentpoles.
- Early October 2026: Reality Fracture debuts. Hasbro later tells investors the quarter includes about $40 million of Magic sales that had been expected in the fourth quarter, mostly from this set.
- November 13, 2026: Star Trek, the year’s last set, hits tabletop after prerelease week.
Hobbit prerelease turnout across the Wizards Play Network, which Cocks put at 13,000 partners, was the highest Hasbro has seen for a Universes Beyond release. MagicCon Atlanta sold out, with badge sales up nearly 30% from last year. Backlist and Secret Lair, he said, are on track for record years.
The Hobbit, which launched in August, is the fourth best-selling set in Magic’s history. And it did that with a leaner product lineup.
Chris Cocks, Chief Executive Officer, Hasbro Q3 2026 earnings call
Goetter said print-run decisions from last quarter are now showing up in the numbers. Hasbro raised initial print and distribution on premier sets, Universes Beyond, Commander decks, and Secret Lair. Sell-through, she said, is confirming that the extra paper has buyers.
Toys Outsold Cards and Lost the Profit Race
Consumer Products still posted more sales than Wizards, $827.9 million against $747.2 million, up 4% from $796.9 million. Operating profit was $173.8 million, including that $48 million tariff refund. Adjusted operating profit doubled to $177.7 million, and the adjusted margin was 21.5%, up from 11.2%.
Strip the refund and the toy aisle is still a much thinner business than cards. Marvel product revenue rose more than 35%, Cocks said, helped by partner-studio releases including Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He also named KPop Demon Hunters and Transformers as leaders in the quarter, with Doctor Doom product already on shelves ahead of Avengers: Doomsday in December.
Entertainment added $20.2 million of revenue, up 9%, and $17.1 million of operating profit. It is a licensing stub, not a studio. Through nine months, Consumer Products operating profit is $111.8 million, which means the toy division was in the hole for the first half even after a cleaner third quarter. Wizards, over the same nine months, made $935.1 million after a $56 million impairment tied to a smaller digital-games slate.
Cocks said the toy and game business grew for a fourth straight quarter and that Hasbro stayed focused on what the company calls GEM Squared lines: products that are gamified, entertainment-led, bought more than once, and aimed at more than one age. Those toys can grow 4% and still not move the earnings needle the way a $616.1 million Magic quarter does. A company that still ships Play-Doh and Peppa Pig now funds its outlook from booster boxes.
Why Hasbro Cannot Print Fewer Magic Sets
Players have spent years asking for fewer sets and fewer reprints, on the grounds that a crowded calendar cheapens the cards they already own. Hasbro’s income statement gives the other side of that argument a number. If Magic slows, the profit that paid for a raised outlook and a doubled share-repurchase target slows with it.
WHY THE SET MACHINE STAYS ON
- Player count: Cocks said organized-play participants in the first nine months of 2026 were up more than 40% compared with all of 2024, the last full year without a tentpole Universes Beyond release.
- Factory output: Goetter said Hasbro is producing more Magic product than at any point in the brand’s history, and that sell-through supports the extra print.
- Next year’s calendar: Cocks said 2027 has six tentpole Magic releases, each with a full product suite, and that Hasbro is scaling production to meet demand.
- Corporate math: Wizards is about 90% of nine-month operating profit, so guidance, dividends, and buybacks now rest on set timing.
Across premier sets, universes beyond, commander decks, and secret lair, we are producing more products than at any point in the brand’s history. And sell through is confirming the demand is there to support it.
Gina Goetter, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer, Hasbro Q3 2026 earnings call
Hasbro’s own 8-K lists the other side of that bet as a risk: the company has to keep putting out new product that consumers accept, “particularly for brands such as Magic: The Gathering in which we have seen an increasing concentration of our sales and profits.” That sentence is the second-order story in Hasbro’s own words. The catalog still has Nerf, Transformers, and Monopoly. The earnings no longer do.
Cost-transformation savings of $105 million through nine months, against a $150 million full-year goal, are being used, Goetter said, to absorb higher royalties and input costs while funding Magic and two 2027 video games, Exodus and Warlock. Royalties rise when licensed Universes Beyond sets hit. The more Tolkien, Marvel, and Star Trek cards Hasbro prints, the more of each dollar leaves as a license fee, which is why Q3 volume had to outrun that cost to hold a 49.2% margin.
Star Trek Pulls In Fans Who Never Played
Star Trek is the last 2026 set, a Universes Beyond release built for the franchise’s 60th year. Wizards posted a November 13 tabletop release date, with prerelease events November 6 to 12 and an MTG Arena launch on November 10. MagicCon Atlanta and the World Championship 32 run November 13 to 15, the same weekend the set goes live.
Cocks said early signals are encouraging and that the set is drawing Star Trek fans who are new to Magic, which he called the core thesis of Universes Beyond. Fans come in through intellectual property they already love, he said, and stay because of the gameplay. The Star Trek card image gallery shows the usual collector bait: special frames, Commander decks themed around the Federation, Klingons, Borg, and more, and actor-signed Headliner cards in Collector Boosters.
That is the flywheel Hasbro is now built on. A licensed world brings in people who never drafted. Some of them find Friday Night Magic at those 13,000 stores. The next licensed world is already on the calendar, because the last one worked. 2026 already ran Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Marvel Super Heroes, The Hobbit, Reality Fracture, and now Star Trek. Cocks said 2027’s Marvel Darkhold Destiny will tell an original Marvel story rather than import an existing one, with a companion comic.
The 2027 Slate Has Six Full Tentpoles
Cocks said Hasbro expects Magic to grow in 2027 on top of a record 2026. Each of the six tentpole releases next year has a full product suite. That is not a fan-service calendar. It is a production plan for a unit that just did $1,630.9 million of Magic revenue in nine months, up 34% from $1,217.7 million, inside a Wizards segment that did $1,993.0 million of sales and $935.1 million of operating profit.
The next reported quarter will not look like this one. Cocks said fourth-quarter Magic will likely be down. Goetter put $40 million of Magic sales pulled forward into the third quarter, mainly Reality Fracture, and said about $15 million of marketing for the video-game launches hits in Q4 along with a step-up in royalties. Wizards’ full-year guide is now 16% to 18% revenue growth at a 44% to 45% operating margin, below the 49.2% just printed. Goetter also said 2027 Wizards margins move to the high 30% range once non-cash amortization from Exodus (April 7, 2027) and Warlock lands.
Hasbro raised full-year constant-currency revenue growth to 7% to 9% from 5% to 7%, adjusted operating margin to 27% to 28% from 25% to 26%, and adjusted EBITDA to $1.575 billion to $1.625 billion from $1.45 billion to $1.50 billion. It doubled the 2026 share-repurchase target. In the third quarter it returned $206 million to shareholders through the dividend and buybacks, paid $99 million in cash dividends, and put $79 million toward debt. Through nine months those figures are $445 million returned and $226 million of debt reduction, with operating cash flow of $907.3 million, up 85%. The board declared a $0.70 quarterly dividend payable December 2, 2026.
Consumer Products is still guided to 1% to 3% revenue growth and an 8% to 10% adjusted operating margin, including the tariff refunds already booked. Goetter said the fourth-quarter toy margin will drop sequentially because the refund was fully recognized in Q3 and holiday shipping is heavier. That is the toy company Hasbro still is on the revenue line. The company it is on the profit line is the one that cannot print fewer Magic sets.
Star Trek goes on sale November 13. Hasbro has already told investors the fourth quarter will not look like the third.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Revenue Did Magic: The Gathering Post in Q3 2026?
Magic posted $616.1 million in the quarter ended September 27, 2026, up from $459.4 million in the quarter ended September 28, 2025, a $156.7 million increase that Hasbro recorded as 34% growth and the first time the brand has cleared $600 million in a quarter. Tabletop gaming, which is mostly those packs, was $613.1 million; digital and licensed gaming for the whole Wizards segment was $134.1 million.
What Share of Hasbro Profit Came From Wizards of the Coast?
Wizards posted $367.4 million of operating profit in the third quarter, 71% of Hasbro’s $517.3 million, and $935.1 million through nine months, about 90% of Hasbro’s $1,040.1 million. Those profit figures are for the whole Wizards and Digital Gaming segment, which also includes Dungeons & Dragons, Monopoly Go! ($41 million in the quarter, $127 million year to date), and other digital titles, and they include a $56 million digital-games impairment in the nine-month number.
What Is Universes Beyond in Magic: The Gathering?
Universes Beyond is Wizards’ line of Magic sets that use other companies’ worlds, from The Hobbit and Marvel to Star Trek, printed as playable Magic cards rather than as a separate game. Sets issued from 2025 onward, including Star Trek, are legal in constructed formats including Standard. Older crossovers were split by format, with some Commander-only. The business pitch, which Cocks repeated on the call, is that people who already love those worlds pick up Magic, then stay for organized play.
When Does the Magic Star Trek Set Release?
The tabletop set releases worldwide on November 13, 2026, after prerelease events from November 6 to 12 and an MTG Arena launch on November 10. MagicCon Atlanta and World Championship 32 are scheduled for November 13 to 15, overlapping the street date. Wizards is also running Commander Party weeks later in November and December around the four ready-to-play decks.
