Ice Caves Land in Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 3
Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 3 puts ice caves on Java, filling the cold-biome gap lush, dripstone and sulfur caves left, and adds Frostbite.
Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 3 puts ice caves on Java Edition, the first playable look at the last game drop of 2026. The Java Team shipped the build on October 6, 2026, ten days after Minecraft Live first showed the frozen underground. Packed ice, calcite, icicles and a zombie named Frostbite now generate under cold Overworld biomes, and the Friends list ships a search box in the same package.
Lush caves and dripstone caves have had that kind of underground identity since 2021. Sulfur caves joined them in Java Edition 26.2 in June 2026. Ice caves close the cold side of that set, and the snapshot also makes plain how little exclusive loot a quarterly drop can carry.
Java Snapshot 3 Opens the Ice Caves
Bedrock players have been in these caves since Preview 26.60.29 on September 30. Java had two technical 26.4 snapshots first, then this one, which is the build that actually adds the biome. The Java Team’s ice caves and Frostbite changelog is the source for every rule below.
THE 26.4 TEST CALENDAR
- September 22, 2026: Snapshot 1 opens the 26.4 cycle on Java.
- September 26, 2026: Minecraft Live shows ice caves and an unnamed frozen zombie.
- September 29, 2026: Snapshot 2 ships fog and debug work, still without the biome.
- September 30, 2026: Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 lets players walk the caves; Mojang names the zombie Frostbite.
- October 6, 2026: Snapshot 3 brings the same content to Java, with Data Pack 123.0 and Resource Pack 100.0.
Ice caves form under colder Overworld biomes and are built mainly from packed ice and calcite. Icicles hang from the ceiling. Large icicles of packed ice sit on the floor and hang overhead. Snow patches show up on the ground, and ores sit in pockets of stone and deepslate rather than in the ice itself. Glow lichen does not generate here. Strays and Frostbites spawn with the usual cave mobs, and ice crystals sometimes sit on the floor.
An ice crystal behaves like an amethyst cluster. It emits light, can face any direction, and breaks if you remove the block that holds it. An icicle sits in the same family as dripstone and sulfur spikes. Pointed down, it can grow to 5 blocks in the dark and never in the Nether. It damages you if it falls, and it deals extra damage if you land on it. Nearby light, or a trip to the Nether, breaks pointed icicles.
The build also lets snow sit on packed ice, and snowballs now knock players back. One of the 18 bug fixes lifts a case where the Vulkan backend locked at 20 fps on some machines.
Lush, Dripstone, Sulfur, Then Ice Caves
At Live, Mojang placed ice caves next to dripstone, lush and sulfur caves, not as a one-off winter skin. Game director Agnes Larsson used the show to repeat that adventure is a main focus, and the September Minecraft Live recap tied this drop to that line. The Sift, a new dimension due in Java and Bedrock in 2027, got more of the broadcast. Ice caves are the piece you can load now.
CAVE BIOMES WITH THEIR OWN PALETTE
| Biome | When it landed | What it owns | Exclusive pull |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lush caves | 2021, Caves and Cliffs | Moss, clay, glow berries | Axolotls, and azalea trees on the surface |
| Dripstone caves | 2021, Caves and Cliffs | Pointed dripstone, dripstone blocks | Copper-heavy stone and falling spikes |
| Sulfur caves | Java 26.2, June 2026 | Sulfur, cinnabar, sulfur spikes | The sulfur cube, plus surface springs |
| Ice caves | 26.4 Snapshot 3 | Packed ice, calcite, icicles, ice crystals | Frostbite, which also spawns on cold surfaces |
That last cell is the snag. Sulfur caves keep the sulfur cube. Lush caves keep axolotls and a tree you can spot from above. Frostbite walks snowy plains and other icy biomes, so you can farm the new drops without ever finding the cave. Testers on Mojang’s board already treated that as the hole in the design.
Calcite is the quiet win for builders. It used to mean a trip to stony peaks. Ice caves put large amounts of it underground, next to packed ice you can now snow-layer. The snapshot does not add a calcite stair set, which is the first request that shows up when people leave the biome.
Frostbite Joins Husks and Drowned
Frostbite is a zombie variant that throws ice balls. It spawns in cold and icy biomes, including ice caves, and it swaps melee and ranged attacks based on distance and whether it is holding those balls. Melee applies Freezing. Ranged throws the projectile. It drops rotten flesh and ice balls. It can stand on powder snow, and it is immune to freezing, so neither the new effect nor powder snow slows it.
The climate chain is now three ways. Husks belong to heat. Drowned belong to water. Frostbite belongs to cold. Zombies and husks turn into Frostbites inside powder snow. Frostbites turn into regular zombies if they stay underwater long enough. The changelog does not publish a tick count for either conversion, so any timer you see in a guide is still unofficial.
You might know the frozen zombie variant. It was just too cool, so we had to name it.
Sofia Dankis, Minecraft drop testing post, September 30, 2026
On Live the mob had no name. Four days later the testing post named it, and Snapshot 3 is the first Java build that uses that name in-game, with new sounds, a spawn egg and baby and outer-layer textures. It still shares spawn space with strays, so an ice cave fight can mix arrows, melee freeze and thrown ice in the same dark hall.
Ice Balls Deal 4 Damage on Impact
Freezing is a status that makes players shake and then take damage, as if they were standing in powder snow for the length of the effect. Leather armor cuts that damage the same way it does in powder snow, but it will not stop the effect from applying and it will not clear it. Mobs that are vulnerable to freezing take five times the damage while the effect is active.
Ice balls are the ingredient that turns a biome screenshot into a kit. They deal 4 damage on impact, scaling down with velocity, plus knockback, then break on a block or a body. You brew lingering, splash and drinkable Potions of Freezing from them. Arrows of Freezing are a lingering Potion of Freezing in the centre of the grid, ringed by eight arrows.
THE FREEZE KIT IN SNAPSHOT 3
| Item | How you get it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Ice ball | Frostbite drop, or its throw | 4 damage, scaling down with velocity, plus knockback |
| Potion of Freezing | Brewed from ice balls | Applies Freezing; leather does not block or clear it |
| Arrow of Freezing | Lingering potion plus eight arrows | Ranged Freezing for PvP and hunts |
| Leather armor | Standard craft | Cuts freeze damage, same rule as powder snow |
That kit works anywhere you can pull a Frostbite, including a powder-snow converter next to a regular zombie spawner. It does not require an ice cave. The five times multiplier on vulnerable mobs is the number farms will chase. The Java Team also asked for feedback at aka.ms/mc-gamedrop_winter26, which is the channel that will decide whether those numbers stay.
Why Ice Caves Still Need a Reason to Visit
Mojang’s own pinned ice caves feedback thread opened on September 30 with questions about how often the biome appears, how dark it feels, whether lava in ice looks wrong, and whether the crystals throw enough light. The replies, and the parallel “mobs for the 26.4 drop” post, keep hitting the same gap: the caves are pretty, and they are easy to leave.
Forced single-biome worlds show a full ice volume, packed ice and hanging spikes with ore sitting in stone islands. Survival seeds are less generous. There is no azalea tree and no sulfur spring. You find the place by digging under snow, or by luck. Ice crystals emit a warm light that fights the cold read. Several testers wanted the freeze effect on water in the biome, the way sulfur pools already punish you with nausea.
WHAT TESTERS KEEP ASKING FOR
- A surface tell: An icy peak, spring or ravine that marks the cave from above, matching lush and sulfur.
- An exclusive mob: Frostbite also walks snowy surfaces, so the cave does not own it; an ice illager leftover from an old mob vote is the name that keeps coming up.
- A calcite set: Stairs, slabs and walls, because the biome finally makes calcite easy to mine.
- Colder light: Ice crystals that throw a blue light, plus ambient particles like a spore blossom for snow.
- A farm loop: Crafting ice blocks from ice balls or icicles, and a way to farm the crystals.
The ice crunch on the new blocks is already one of the better new sounds in the drop. Packed ice and blue ice still use the old set, which makes a cave floor feel split when you step from crystal to ice. That is a small note next to the loot problem, and it is the kind of note snapshots exist to catch.
Compared with sulfur caves, which shipped a full yellow-and-red block family and a cube that only lives there, this drop is a biome, two blocks, one mob and a potion line. That can still grow before the last drop of 2026 leaves snapshot. It is the shape on the board today.
Remove Friend Moves Into Player Options
The same snapshot replaces the Social Interactions screen with Other Players and rebuilds the Friends list. The list can search. On the Friends tab, the profile-name box used to send requests also filters the list. On the requests tab, a search box appears once you have 15 or more pending requests. A new sort button cycles between online-first and alphabetical order. Clicking a player’s icon opens Player Options, and the old Remove Friend button is gone from the list; that action now lives inside Player Options.
Other Players is the pause-menu and in-game screen for whoever is in the world with you. It only appears when the world is open to multiplayer, including LAN, dedicated servers and Realms. The default key is P, renamed from Social Interactions. It lists who is online, who just left, and who recently spoke in chat. Muting hides chat until you restart the game. Blocking stays on Other Players. Reporting drafts no longer nag you on world exit if they can be continued later, though chat reports can never be continued, and name or skin reports only resume if that player is still in your Friends list. Quit Game on the main menu now warns you if an unsent draft would be lost.
Visibility moved from Online Options into the Friends list. Pause-menu icons now follow the main-menu order, and the Friends button has a new icon. Several of the 18 fixes in this snapshot are Friends chrome: tab colour, button outlines, pixel-grid icons, a grayed-out LAN button, Xbox chat restriction copy, and an error string that used the wrong dash. The social work is not a biome, but it is the change most Java players will touch every session they play with other people.
Enable Snapshots in the Installations Tab
Snapshots are Java only. Open the Minecraft Launcher, turn on snapshots in the Installations tab, and run this build in a copy of your world. The Java Team’s own warning is blunt: testing versions can corrupt a save, so back up first or keep the snapshot in a separate folder. A cross-platform server jar is posted with the changelog. Bugs go to bugs.mojang.com. Feature notes go to feedback.minecraft.net.
Bedrock already had the caves in preview on September 30, so a Realms testing world on that edition is the other legal way to walk the biome with friends. Nintendo Switch 2 gets Minecraft on October 27, 2026, which is a separate store date and not this drop. The Sift remains a 2027 Java and Bedrock target, more than 14 years after the last new dimension.
Snapshot 3 is the first time Java can test the last drop of 2026 as a place, a mob and a potion, not a trailer. Ice caves now sit on the same underground map as lush, dripstone and sulfur. Whether anyone stays there still depends on what the next snapshot adds to the floor.
