Animals Pulls 54.6 Million Views Despite Affleck’s Worst Reviews

Ben Affleck’s Animals drew 30.8 million Netflix views from October 12 to 18, topping its own opening-week total. Across two chart weeks the 108-minute thriller has now logged 54.6 million views, a haul that sits beside a Rotten Tomatoes score of 32 percent.

That split is the whole story. The movie opened October 9 on Netflix and in select theaters, then spent two straight weeks at No. 1 on the English-language film list while reviewers called it Affleck’s weakest turn behind the camera.

How Animals Reached 54.6 Million Views

Netflix counts a view as total hours watched divided by runtime. For the week of October 5 to 11, Animals posted 23.8 million views and 42.8 million hours. It had only been live since October 9, so that first tally covers three days, not seven.

The next scoreboard, covering October 12 to 18, is a full week. Animals added 30.8 million views and 55.4 million hours, which is why the two-week view total is 54.6 million and the two-week hour total is 98.2 million. The weekly number rose. The daily clip did not, and it was never going to after a three-day launch.

THE TWO-WEEK TALLY

  • First chart week: 23.8 million views and 42.8 million hours, with three days on the service.
  • Second chart week: 30.8 million views and 55.4 million hours over seven days.
  • Combined: 54.6 million views and 98.2 million hours, No. 1 both weeks.
  • Runtime: 108 minutes, rated R.

On October 22 a title tracker still had Animals at No. 1 on the global English film chart, 13 days after release. Week-three official numbers had not posted yet.

Week Two Added 30.8 Million Views

Netflix’s own recap said Animals held the top spot with 30.8 million views. Tyler Perry’s Doing Life stayed at No. 2 with 7.3 million, which means Affleck’s movie more than quadrupled the next English-language title.

Catalog animation filled the rest of the floor. Ice Age: Collision Course took third with 6.3 million views. The original Ice Age, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Ice Age: Continental Drift, and Ice Age: The Meltdown all sat inside the same top ten.

NETFLIX ENGLISH MOVIES, OCTOBER 12 TO 18

Rank Title Views Hours viewed
1 Animals 30.8 million 55.4 million
2 Doing Life 7.3 million 13.1 million
3 Ice Age: Collision Course 6.3 million 10.2 million
4 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 4.9 million 7.8 million
5 Ice Age 4.8 million 6.6 million

As of October 17, FlixPatrol had Animals at No. 1 in 78 countries and on the chart in 93. It had held the top slot from launch in 64 of those 78 markets. The U.S. list had it first every day since October 10.

Critics Called It Affleck’s Worst Directing Job

Rotten Tomatoes lists 32 percent positive from 74 reviews, with an average of 5.4 out of 10. That sits under Live by Night, his 2016 gangster picture, which holds 34 percent. The Metacritic score of 33 out of 100, from 21 critics, lands in the site’s generally unfavorable band.

Brian Tallerico, a film critic, did not hedge.

It brings me no joy to say that this is easily Affleck’s worst directorial effort, a movie that clearly went through the Rewrite Machine a dozen or so times, losing important things like theme, focus, character, and tension.

Brian Tallerico, film critic, RogerEbert.com

He also argued the Los Angeles photography looked drained for a movie shot by Robert Elswit, the cinematographer on Nightcrawler, and wondered how much of that came from post-production shortcuts. Other notices called the script overwrought, the marriage scenes tepid, and the suspense thin for a ransom plot. A few warmer reviews treated it as pulp that works when it stays cynical, and Gillian Anderson’s fixer kept coming up as the performance that bites.

Audience math is kinder than the critic slate and colder than a hit usually gets. IMDb shows a viewer rating of 5.7 out of 10 from about 26,000 user marks. People finish the movie. They do not rave.

AFFLECK AS DIRECTOR, CRITICS’ SCORES

  • Argo: 96 percent.
  • Gone Baby Gone: 94 percent.
  • Air: 93 percent.
  • The Town: 92 percent.
  • Live by Night: 34 percent.
  • Animals: 32 percent, from 74 reviews.

Four of his six directing credits sit in the nineties. The new one is his floor. Netflix users did not treat that floor as a stop sign.

The Kidnapping Hook Still Works

Affleck directed, co-wrote, and stars as Mark Kimball, a wealthy independent running for mayor of Los Angeles. Kerry Washington plays his wife, Abigail. On Halloween their son Denny is taken, and a caller wants $7 million by midnight with no police. Most of the family money is already sunk in the campaign.

Netflix’s own recap frames the night as a three-way choice: pay, call the authorities, or handle it privately. Anderson’s Dayle Burton, the operative they hire, puts the marriage on the table in one line: “Your son’s life is at stake… So whatever secrets you’ve kept from one another need to come out now.”

That is the engine. The Taken piece is the clock. The Gone Girl piece is the couple, and Affleck already knows that machine from the other side of the camera. Reviewers have also pointed at Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film High and Low, a rich man’s ransom that slides into class and guilt, as the plot skeleton. Spike Lee already remade that story as Highest 2 Lowest. Animals borrows the bones and moves them into a Los Angeles campaign house.

Steven Yeun plays Sam Allison, the adviser pushing for cash and for Dayle. Adriana Paz is the housekeeper Cecilia Trujillo. Luis Gerardo Méndez is Ramon. Ray Fisher is Ron Sperling. Christopher Woodley plays Denny. Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray share script credit with Affleck. Harry Gregson-Williams wrote the score. William Goldenberg and Christopher Rouse cut it.

The louder complaint from people who sat through it is not the premise. It is a last stretch that withholds a clean payoff, which is also why they stay until the credits. They argue about the marriage. They argue about what the movie thinks it is saying. They still hit play.

Damon Dropped Out After the First Delay

The project did not start as an Affleck vehicle. It was built as a Matt Damon lead, with Jennifer Garner in talks, then sat for a year after Affleck delayed the shoot.

HOW THE CASTING SHUFFLE PLAYED OUT

  1. January 2024: The film is announced with Affleck directing from a script he wrote with Billy Ray, and Damon set to star. Garner is in talks. A March 2024 Los Angeles shoot is on the calendar.
  2. Early 2024: Affleck delays production just before cameras, after getting cold feet. Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun are already circling.
  3. February 2025: The film moves again. Damon is out, tied to The Odyssey. Affleck takes the lead himself. Washington replaces Garner. Méndez and Paz join. Anderson is confirmed.
  4. March 7, 2025: Principal photography starts in and around Los Angeles. Ray Fisher, Mark Kassen, and Christopher Woodley come in the same month.
  5. October 9, 2026: Netflix and select theaters open the movie on the same day.

Affleck later said he talked to Garner about playing opposite him and that she shut it down. “We don’t wanna do that. You just get baggage,” he recalled her saying. He still wants to work with her. He did not want the audience’s history with their marriage sitting on every close-up.

The finished film is a product of Artists Equity, the artist-led studio Affleck founded with Damon and Gerry Cardinale of RedBird Capital. Makeready’s Brad Weston and Collin Creighton developed it with Fifth Season. Affleck, Damon, and Dani Bernfeld produce. The local shoot was sold as a jobs argument as much as a setting argument. The city is the backdrop and the industry base.

The AI Admission Did Not Slow the Clicks

In late September Affleck told an industry audience he used AI “for lots of things” on Animals and then declined to say which things. He compared a full disclosure to a magician pointing out the extra bunny before the trick. He called it a human movie and a case of using the tools in post, not a prompt that spits out a film.

I used AI for lots of things in that movie. I’m a little bit hesitant to point out what they are, or even talk about it, because in my business, we’re trying to foster the illusion of reality, right?

Ben Affleck, director and star, industry event in late September

He had already sold his AI company InterPositive to Netflix earlier in 2026. Staff from that shop worked on the movie. Affleck has said the model trained on this production’s own footage, for jobs like relighting, wire removal, and background fixes, and that if you can see the trick, it has already failed, the way a bad effect fails.

The admission did what those admissions do. It became a reason to skip the movie before anyone had skipped it. One widely shared reaction said he had just talked audiences out of watching. Another said half of Hollywood had sworn off the tools and then used them quietly. Tallerico’s review even asked whether some of the city shots were synthetic.

None of that shows up in the chart. The people who wanted a boycott did not move 54.6 million views. The people who wanted a Friday-night ransom picture did.

January’s Rip Still Has the Higher Open

Animals is Affleck’s second Netflix title of 2026. The Rip, the crime thriller he produced with Damon, opened in January to 41.6 million views, held No. 1 for three weeks, and had 136.1 million views by midyear. Animals opened at 23.8 million. That gap is real. Damon’s name on the earlier movie is one explanation. So is January versus October. So is a cleaner critical ride; The Rip arrived with a 77 percent critics score.

What Animals has that The Rip’s launch week did not need is staying power against a rotten score. It is still the title to beat on the English film list. It is doing that with a mayoral candidate, a Halloween night, a $7 million demand, and a marriage that cannot survive the truth, which is a formula Netflix already knows how to feed.

Week-three views will tell whether the second-week 30.8 million was the peak or another hold. As of October 22, the movie had not left the top slot.
