Krypto Saves the Day Returns as a Five-Minute Kids Snack
Krypto Saves the Day Season 2A hits HBO Max on September 10 as five-minute non-canon shorts, while a separate Krypto series still has no network.
Krypto Saves the Day Season 2A arrives on HBO Max on September 10 as a new set of five-minute animated shorts about Superman’s dog. James Gunn and Peter Safran, the DC Studios co-CEOs, executive produce the series, which Gunn has already taken off the DC Universe canon list.
The late-August date treats the return like a full spin-off coming back. What is coming back is the same seasonal cartoon that rolled out four times after the July 11, 2025 film, mostly on YouTube, with Clark Kent in the sidekick seat and almost no homework attached.
What Season 2A of Krypto Saves the Day Is
HBO Max has dated the next batch as Season 2A, the old split-season label for a show that does not run like a weekly drama. TVmaze now carries an untitled Season 2 listing for September 10 and nothing else: no episode name, no count, no second air date.
Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios make the shorts with Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company. Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation, is an executive producer beside Gunn and Safran. Ryan Kramer and David Gemmill wrote and directed the first season, and Paul Fraser scored it. Krypto’s look copies the 2025 film, which modeled the dog on Gunn’s rescue pup Ozu, including the cocked ear.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The date: Season 2A is scheduled on HBO Max on September 10, 2026.
- The format: Season 1 was four self-contained shorts of about five minutes, built around holidays and seasons.
- The bosses: Gunn, Safran, and Register remain the executive producers.
- The canon line: Gunn said on Threads the shorts are not DC Universe continuity.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Episode titles: None have been issued for Season 2A.
- How many shorts: The 2A label implies a split, but the slate is still a blank.
- Capes for Hire: Further shorts under the title Krypto & Supergirl: Capes for Hire have no date.
Superman appears in the cartoons in a non-speaking part, a walking reminder of David Corenswet’s Clark without pulling the shorts into the next movie. Man of Tomorrow is still dated 2027. These films are the thing you can finish before the bus actually leaves.
Four Shorts Ran Just Under 22 Minutes
Season 1 is four films with a listed runtime of five minutes each. Add the YouTube clocks and the whole run is 21 minutes and 54 seconds. The first short, School Bus Scuffle, went up on August 13, 2025, two days before Superman hit digital, and later sat on the disc as a bonus extra.
It plays like a silent chase. Krypto blows out of Clark’s apartment after a pigeon, heat-visions the Daily Planet globe, nearly drops a school bus, and still loses the bird. Halloween Havoc (October 1) sends him after a black cat. Package Pandemonium (November 28) is a holiday gift he cannot leave alone, with a mailman and a Santa gag at the end. Coastal Catastrophe closed the set on April 18, 2026, Superman Day, with a beach, a hot dog, a seagull, a crab, and a Kara Zor-El cameo ahead of Supergirl’s June 26 opening.
THE FIRST-SEASON CLOCK
| Short | Date | Length | The mess |
|---|---|---|---|
| School Bus Scuffle | August 13, 2025 | 5:32 | Pigeon chase, bus rescue |
| Halloween Havoc | October 1, 2025 | 5:28 | Black cat on Halloween night |
| Package Pandemonium | November 28, 2025 | 5:23 | Holiday gift wrecks Metropolis |
| Coastal Catastrophe | April 18, 2026 | 5:31 | Beach, hot dog, Supergirl cameo |
DC Kids posted the full shorts on YouTube, which is where most of the audience actually met them. The official copy of the opener is still up as a complete episode.
DC’s own Shorty Awards write-up of the dog-unboxing campaign put School Bus Scuffle at 1,123,591 views, Halloween Havoc at 5,795,396, and Package Pandemonium at 13,983,159. The beach short had 7.8 million views on the DC Kids playlist by early June 2026. Continuity arguments do not move those numbers. A five-minute dog cartoon found the people it was cut for, and they were not waiting on a canon chart.
Gunn Took the Dog Off the Continuity Map
After the first short landed, a fan asked Gunn on Threads whether Krypto Saves the Day counted in the DC Universe. He answered in six words.
No. I love ’em tho
James Gunn, DC Studios co-CEO, on Threads
The designs still ape the movie. The shorts still went out with the home release of Superman. Gunn still put his name on them. He also drew a hard line so nobody has to ask whether a pigeon fight changes Man of Tomorrow. Some viewers still want every DC cartoon to count. These films were built so they do not have to.
That is why the “Gunn spin-off series” label is doing extra work. The returning product is a kids short that the person whose name sells it has already waved off the timeline. He likes it. He does not need it to matter.
A Second Krypto Series Still Has No Network
Season 2 of these shorts entered production in April 2026, as Coastal Catastrophe was about to drop. Register answered the pickup in a prepared statement.
More Krypto? Absolutely. These first shorts gave our artists a creative playground to tell fun, charming stories as we explore new formats and distribution models for some of our most popular characters.
Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation, in a prepared statement
He also asked who would not want to spend the day animating a super cute dog. The distribution model is the tell. The films start on YouTube and YouTube Kids, ride along on a Superman disc, then sit on HBO Max. Register is testing a short-form kids lane for a character the movie already made famous, not filling a hole in the live-action map.
Two months later, on June 25 at Annecy, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation announced a different Krypto project. C.H. Greenblatt, the Chowder and Jellystone creator, is developing a kids series in which Krypto tags along with misfit criminal wannabes down the block and slowly redeems them. IGN’s festival copy said that series, like Absolute Batman, was in development with no network. Joker: Laugh Riot was the one marked greenlit.
Safran, on the same stage, called Krypto one of his favourite characters in the DC canon and said the studio was thrilled he was finally getting his own show. That line landed after four Krypto Saves the Day shorts had already run, after Season 2 of those shorts was already in production, and after Gunn had already said the shorts were not canon. In the studio’s own mouth, the Max films are the playground. The Greenblatt series is the show. It still has no date and no channel. Season 2A does.
Cartoon Network Already Gave Krypto Two Seasons
The dog is not a new merchandising idea that Gunn invented in 2025. Otto Binder and Curt Swan put Krypto in Adventure Comics No. 210 in March 1955. Filmation parked him in Superboy segments in 1966. DC’s own recap of the character walks that path and then lands on the two-season Cartoon Network series in 2005, developed by Alan Burnett and Paul Dini, which ran 39 episodes from March 25, 2005, to December 15, 2006. Dwayne Johnson voiced him in 2022’s DC League of Super-Pets. Smallville and Titans used him too.
KRYPTO ON A SCREEN
- March 1955: Adventure Comics No. 210 introduces Krypto the Superdog.
- 1966: Filmation puts the dog in Superboy cartoon segments.
- March 25, 2005: Krypto the Superdog premieres on Cartoon Network and runs 39 episodes over two seasons.
- 2022: DC League of Super-Pets gives him a feature, with Johnson on the voice.
- July 11, 2025: Gunn’s Superman opens, with Krypto built on Ozu.
- August 13, 2025: School Bus Scuffle starts the current shorts on YouTube.
Every Superman boom for seventy years has left a kids product with a dog on it. Season 2A is that product again, only now the dog looks like the movie and the episodes are short enough to clear before bedtime. The 2005 show was a real series with half-hour slots. This one is a holiday calendar.
The Holiday Box Was Built for Paws
The people these shorts were made for showed up in the campaign DC filed with the Shorty Awards, not in DCU ranking threads. After Superman opened, the training app Woofz tracked Google searches for “adopt a dog near me” up 513%, with “rescue dog adoption near me” up 163% and “adopt a schnauzer” up 299%. Warner Bros. and Best Friends Animal Society covered adoption fees from July 1 to 10, 2025, and 454 pets went home in that window. Gunn called the spike a barrage of blessings and said it might be the greatest of them.
Natalia Shahmetova, Woofz’s CEO, warned that adoption is a real commitment and that the hype fades while the dog stays. DC then built an influencer kit that a dog could open by pulling a rope toy, because unboxings had been for people with thumbs. The holiday short logged 14 million views in that same write-up, the campaign’s peak, which is the cleanest picture of who actually watched.
WHAT THE DOG BOX CARRIED
- The kits: Ninety branded boxes went out, plus four oversized shelter versions in Los Angeles.
- The mix: Four paid dogfluencers, 76 in-kind recipients, and names on the list that included Gunn and Safran.
- The posts: Sixty-two brand and influencer channels put up 210 pieces of kit content, and DC tallied 3.9 million campaign views.
- The shelters: Santa Monica Animal Shelter Foundation, Best Friends Los Angeles, Angel City Pit Bulls, and Hesperia Animal Shelter got treats, blankets, toys, and cash.
That is a toy-aisle and shelter operation sitting under a superhero date announcement. Register’s “new formats” line is the same idea in studio language: get the dog in front of kids on YouTube, give Max a family title it can date, and keep Superman in the house until the next expensive film is ready. The Greenblatt series, if it ever lands, would be the longer version of that bet. Season 2A is the one with a Tuesday.
Season 2A begins on HBO Max on September 10 with no episode titles posted and no claim that any of it counts. The last batch took just under 22 minutes from first pigeon to last hot dog. This one will not take longer than a school run unless they change the clock.
