Jalen Hurts Is Out as Blood Thinners Bar Contact

Jalen Hurts is clinically stable after clots in both lungs, but blood thinners bar contact football and likely end his 2026 Eagles season.

Jalen Hurts is out indefinitely after doctors found clots in both lungs, and blood thinners now bar him from contact football. The Philadelphia Eagles and his agent, Nicole Lynn, said on October 19 that the 28-year-old is clinically stable, with no major limits on how he moves. He can condition. He cannot be hit.

Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter said recovery should take three months, which would run past the regular season. The club has not closed 2026 in so many words. The drug protocol does that work for them.

Blood Thinners Close Contact Football

The joint statement is the cleanest account of what changed. Specialists in London first called it a left-calf superficial vein thrombosis. Further testing found a deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, clots in both lungs. Treatment “should only involve anticoagulation (i.e. blood thinners).” While that lasts, “he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including football.”

Lynn and the Eagles said the prognosis is very good and that they expect a full recovery, with no long-term effects. He will stay around the team and keep conditioning. Contact football comes back when he is off the drugs.

That split is the whole football problem. He is not too sick to stand in a meeting or ride a bike. A hit on thinners is the banned act, because a bleed after contact can turn a treatable clot into an emergency. Philadelphia is 2-4 and has lost four in a row, its first such skid since 2020, and the starter who took it to a Super Bowl title in February 2025 is now a spectator in a hoodie.

How a Calf Cleat Reached Both Lungs

The path from a bruised calf to both lungs is short on the calendar and long on decisions. Hurts told the training staff on October 8 that he had been cleated in the October 4 home loss to the Rams, his first treatment session after that game. He practiced. He flew. London is where the first scan happened.

THE EIGHT DAYS THAT CHANGED THE DIAGNOSIS

  1. October 4, 2026: Gets cleated on the left calf in a home loss to the Rams and does not seek treatment that night.
  2. October 8: Visits the training room after practice and reports the calf, the first session for that injury.
  3. October 10: Undergoes an ultrasound in London that shows a superficial clot; medical staff conclude he can safely play.
  4. October 11: Starts at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, goes 21 of 40 for 220 yards and a touchdown in a 19-17 loss to Jacksonville, then flies home with the club.
  5. October 14: A follow-up ultrasound shows movement in the small clot; he is ruled out of the Carolina game.
  6. October 17: Lands on injured reserve, a four-game minimum, the first IR stint of his seven-year career.
  7. October 18: Tanner McKee starts a 25-14 home loss.
  8. October 19: Lynn and the Eagles confirm deep-vein thrombosis and clots in both lungs, with blood thinners and a contact ban.

Seven days separated the cleat from the London kickoff. Eight days separated that kickoff from the lung diagnosis. The first finding was treated as a watchable surface clot, a real category that often needs rest and monitoring rather than immediate blood thinners. The later scans showed the clot had reached the deep veins and then the lungs. That progression, not a new hit in Carolina, is what ended the argument about whether he could sneak back in November.

What Three Months of Anticoagulation Means

Blood thinners do not melt a clot on contact. They stop existing clots from growing and new ones from forming while the body breaks the old ones down, and bleeding is the most common side effect. In a living room that tradeoff is acceptable. In an NFL pocket it is not, because a helmet, a knee, or a facemask to the calf can bleed into muscle, joints, or worse.

Dr. Parth M. Rali, a professor of thoracic medicine and surgery at Temple’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine, was not involved in Hurts’ care. He described the anatomy in plain terms anyway. Superficial veins are local roads. Deep veins are the highway to the heart and then the lungs. Injury brings inflammation, and inflammation can form a clot. A surface clot can be watched. Once it is in the deep system, the next stop is the pulmonary arteries.

Your body will resolve the clots on its own and the blood thinners will prevent a blood clot from forming. But while you’re on the blood thinners, you cannot be involved in any form of contact sports, because if you get an inadvertent, unanticipated injury, you can bleed at the sites, which could be critical and life-threatening also.

Sports-medicine guidance for athletes with venous clots points to the same window Rapoport named. A 2022 review in Current Sports Medicine Reports recommends direct oral anticoagulants for 3 months in most cases, then a gradual return after that course is done. Some athletes need longer or lifelong dosing, and a timed-dose plan can be discussed only after that first stretch, with hematology in the room. The Eagles have not said which drug Hurts is on, or for how many weeks. Three months from October 19 lands in mid-January, after the regular season is over.

Injured reserve’s paperwork floor is shorter. Placed on October 17, he must miss four games, which are Carolina, Dallas, Washington, and the Giants, with a bye after that. Week 11 at home against Pittsburgh on November 22 is the first date he is eligible. Eligibility is not clearance. Clearance waits on the prescription.

Moton, Olave and Barmore Made It Back

A clot diagnosis is not an automatic career ending, which is the quieter fact sitting under the panic. Carolina tackle Taylor Moton returned to practice on October 13 after doctors found multiple clots in his right lung in June, about three and a half months later, and prepared as if he would play against these same Eagles. New Orleans receiver Chris Olave missed late 2025 with a clot in a lung, came off thinners on June 29, and has 43 catches for 580 yards and two touchdowns this season. Patriots tackle Christian Barmore lost most of 2024 to clots and recurring symptoms, then played all 17 games in 2025 and has been active in 2026.

NFL CLOT CASES AND WHERE THEY LANDED

Player Finding Time away from contact Where it stands
Jalen Hurts, Eagles QB DVT and clots in both lungs, October 2026 On thinners, contact barred Injured reserve, conditioning only
Taylor Moton, Panthers OT Multiple clots in the right lung, June 2026 About 3 and a half months to practice Practiced October 13, aimed to play Philadelphia
Chris Olave, Saints WR Pulmonary clot, late 2025 Off thinners June 29, 2026 Playing, 43 catches, 580 yards, 2 TDs
Christian Barmore, Patriots DT Blood clots, 2024 Most of 2024, then a full 2025 Active in 2026

Those returns do not write Hurts’ chart. Hematology is individual, and a dual-threat quarterback takes hits a wide receiver can sometimes duck. They do show why the medical line in the statement, full recovery and no long-term effects, is not fantasy. The open question is 2026, not 2027.

A 25-14 Loss on McKee’s First Start

Tanner McKee, a 2023 sixth-round pick out of Stanford, learned he was starting when he stepped into the first-team huddle on Thursday. He went 26 of 45 for 215 yards and a touchdown, no interceptions, a 77.5 rating, and three sacks in a 25-14 loss to Carolina. Philadelphia netted 222 yards, its second-lowest total of the year. McKee said afterward the team needed him to be better. Nick Sirianni said everything was on the table for the offense.

Hurts leaves five starts of 89 of 154, a 57.8% clip, 933 yards, eight touchdowns, three interceptions, and an 84.7 rating. That completion rate is a career low outside his rookie year. McKee’s 57.8% in one afternoon is a different stat, one start, not a season, and it came without the running back the scheme is built around.

WHO WAS ALREADY MISSING

  • Saquon Barkley: Out with a hamstring, so the backup quarterback also lost the league’s featured runner.
  • A.J. Brown: Traded to the Patriots on June 1, stripping the offense of its other alpha receiver before camp.
  • Landon Dickerson: On injured reserve, one more starter off the interior line.
  • Joe Milton and Cole Payton: Milton signed off Dallas’s practice squad on October 16; Payton, a rookie, is the next man up behind McKee.

The next date is Monday night, October 26, against the Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field. Washington on November 1 and the Giants on November 8 follow. At 2-4, Philadelphia sits with Dallas in the NFC East, behind the Giants at 3-2-1. McKee does not have to be Hurts for 12 more weeks. He has to be functional on a roster that was already leaking starters before the calf became a lung problem.

Sirianni Puts Every Medical Call on the Staff

Asked on October 19 whether the club would have handled the calf differently, Sirianni would not step onto that ice. He is a football coach, he said, and the doctors have his trust. That is the official posture, and it is also the gap people keep circling: a known clot, a start in London, two transatlantic flights, then clots in both lungs. The team has described the first scan as a surface clot it believed was safe to play through. It has not published a fuller timeline of sleep, hospital hours, or why the next ultrasound waited until the Wednesday after the flight home.

I’m not a medical expert. I lean on our guys in all those situations. I’m a football coach. I lean on our medical experts in every single situation. I have full trust and full faith in them. It’s not just me that has major care for our players. It’s them as well.

Nick Sirianni, Eagles head coach, October 19 press conference

Rali has said a surface clot is often watched, not automatically thinned. That matches the first public description. It does not answer whether a transatlantic flight and a full game, on little rest after overnight testing, was the conservative choice. Other NFL players have come back from clots, including this season, which is why a rush to call this a ruined career overshoots the medicine. The sequence still sits there, and the club is the only party that can fill it in.

Still on the Payroll Through 2028

None of this moves the money. Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million contract in 2023, $51 million a year, with $179.4 million guaranteed and a full no-trade clause. The deal runs through 2028. Super Bowl LIX, on February 9, 2025, is the prize on that paper. He threw two scores and ran for another in the win over Kansas City and took MVP. In 2025 he threw a career-high 25 passing touchdowns, 3,224 yards, six interceptions, plus 421 rushing yards and eight rushing scores. Peers ranked him 56th in the league’s Top 100 heading into this year.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The diagnosis: Deep-vein thrombosis and clots in both lungs, treated with blood thinners only.
  • The restriction: No contact, including football, until he is off those drugs.
  • The short-term plan: Stay with the team, keep conditioning, IR for at least four games.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Drug duration: The club has not said how many weeks he will stay on thinners.
  • 2026 football: Rapoport’s three-month window implies the season is gone; the statement does not use those words.
  • The London night: Overnight testing is established; a full hour-by-hour sleep and hospital log is not.

Hurts will be in the building while McKee takes Dallas on October 26. The contact ban is the line that matters, and it does not move until the prescription does.
