Midnight Spider-Man Turns Peter Parker Into Oscorp’s Hybrid

Marvel’s Midnight Spider-Man #1, on sale October 7, turns Peter Parker into an Oscorp hybrid instead of a kid bit at a science demo. Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist ScieTronc open a Parental Advisory first issue in which the company mutates a young man while chasing eternal life, then mines that mutation to build more human-animal hybrids.

The book is also the door Marvel is using to start a whole horror line. Midnight Spider-Man, Midnight Fantastic Four, and Midnight X-Men arrive together as the only new Marvel comics that day, and the house copy now says that with great power comes something monstrous.

Oscorp Turns Peter Into a Hybrid

Marvel’s own issue page does not mention a fairground spider or a thief Peter failed to stop. It describes Oscorp’s pursuit of eternal life, a hideous spider hybrid, and a kid who has to use that body to fight the people who made it. Power here is not an accident he learns to carry. It is a lab result the company wants to copy.

Preview pages still put Peter on an Oscorp visit with Felicia Hardy and in a white-lit talk with Uncle Ben. Caged animals sit in the building. A giant decomposing creature houses a spider like the one that later bursts from Peter’s chest, in the register of Alien’s chestburster. Police drones, holographic glasses, and chest-mounted holo rigs sit on the street as everyday gear.

Those props will look familiar to anyone who has seen an Oscorp tour on film. The plot Marvel is selling around them is different. Oscorp does not just bite Peter. It uses him, then tries to industrialize what it finds.

One Wednesday With No Other Marvel Comics

Marvel first posted the Midnight line on May 11 with an August start for Jonathan Hickman’s Midnight X-Men, then Benjamin Percy’s Midnight Fantastic Four, then Johnson’s Spider-Man. On June 18 the publisher folded all three into a same-day October 7 launch and cleared the rest of its new-comics slate that day so shops would have nothing else new from the company to sell beside them.

Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski tied the line to the original New Universe and to two Ultimate Universes, the last time Marvel hung a fresh world on books that felt known and new at once. Midnight Universe executive editor Dan Buckley called the launch more than the birth of another new universe and said the same-day plan was meant to match the creators’ scale. Hickman, who has been writing Ultimate Spider-Man, is inside this line too, on the vampire-and-mutant book, which is how you know the publisher is not treating Midnight as a single spooky one-shot.

THE OPENING THREE

Percy said any other continuity would not let him write the Fantastic Four because he is too mean for the first family, and that this version channels cosmic Lovecraftian terror, mad science, cults, and hidden realities. Hickman said he has not been this excited about a book in a very long time, and that Midnight X-Men is the long-plot, long-payoff kind of project he prefers. Spider-Man is still the face most shops will put in the window.

Giger, Cronenberg, and Junji Ito

Johnson came over from Infernal Hulk. ScieTronc, in a Marvel Comics debut, drew Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe; Neeraj Menon, who colored Alien vs Captain America, handles color, with Joe Caramagna on letters and Jordan White editing. Johnson has said he wants the villains through a John Carpenter or Resident Evil lens. He has also said, in public, exactly which horror names the Peter book is chasing.

Marvel’s putting a TON of trust in ScieTronc and me on this project, and we’re using that trust to make big asks and take big creative risks. I want to see a Spider-Man that was conceived by H.R. Giger, directed by David Cronenberg, adapted for the comic page by Junji Ito. I want Peter’s origin to be so upsetting it haunts me, and to see the Lizard and Doctor Octopus through the lens of a John Carpenter movie or a Resident Evil game.

He added that he has never written a longer series outline than this one. By the time #1 ships he will have written two 50-plus-issue series for Marvel and DC, and he wants Midnight Spider-Man to be the longest, most epic series of his career. That is not how a publisher talks about a six-issue scare. It is how you talk about a flagship you expect to still be mutating years out.

Peter Already Crawled Out of a Cocoon

Body-horror Peter is not a new Marvel idea, which is why this origin has to change the job of the spider, not just the amount of gore. In 2005-06’s The Other, Peter David, Reginald Hudlin, and J. Michael Straczynski had Morlun beat Peter to death, after which the man shed his skin, spun a cocoon under the Brooklyn Bridge, and came back with night vision and venomous wrist stingers. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #4, cover-dated January 2006, is where the Other itself first took shape as the spider that is more spider than man.

Man-Spider stories have also pushed Peter past the human side until he was a thing that hunted people. Those plots still sat on top of the old gift of power. Midnight starts later in the moral chain. Oscorp wants a post-mortality future. Peter is the breakthrough. The spider is not a totem that asks him to be a hero. It is tissue the company can grow again.

Johnson has been careful not to spell out what the iconic spider is, or what it is doing to Peter, calling that a mystery the series will reveal slowly. He said the body horror from issue to issue is extreme, and that the hope is readers finishing #3 will struggle to imagine where it can go, because the fringe science has to still have new horrors at 25, 50, and 100-plus issues.

What the Parker Incident Sets Up

The second and third issues are already solicited, which is how you can see the engine without waiting for October. Issue #2, on sale November 18, asks where Peter Parker is, then lists a new Oscorp employee, an NYC teaching assistant, and a Queens municipal services tech who did not clock in. The company is already producing disappearances, not just one famous bite.

THE MIDNIGHT SOLICIT CALENDAR

1. May 11, 2026: Marvel posts the Midnight line, originally kicking off in August with Midnight X-Men.
2. June 18, 2026: All three #1s move to October 7 and become the only new Marvel comics that day; main covers use Cloaked Cover dress.
3. August 27, 2026: Marvel posts debut-issue first looks, Steve Beach mask and chest-spider concept art, and December #3 covers.
4. August 31, 2026: Final Order Cut-Off for the debut issues.
5. October 7, 2026: Midnight Spider-Man #1, Midnight Fantastic Four #1, and Midnight X-Men #1 go on sale.
6. November 18, 2026: Issue #2, with missing Oscorp, school, and city workers in Queens.
7. December 16, 2026: Issue #3, “The Parker Incident,” with Doctor Octavius building a second synthetic mutant.

Marvel’s copy for the Parker Incident solicit has Peter frantically searching for a way to reclaim his humanity while Oscorp hunts the urban legend called the Spider-Man as its first breakthrough toward a post-mortality future. In the deepest labs, Doctor Octavius uses the lessons of that incident to engineer the world’s second synthetic mutant, a living horror meant to make even Spider-Man obsolete. The sequel villain is not a man in tentacles who chose power. He is the next unit on the line.

A Working-Class Kid Against Oscorp

Hickman’s recent Ultimate Peter is a married adult in a political city. Midnight’s Peter is a young man Oscorp can tour, mutate, and file. Johnson has talked about writing an in-story manga Peter reads, and ScieTronc’s mix of manga and Japanese horror is the reason that detail exists; it is character, not cameo. The fight the solicits describe is labor against a company that wants to live forever inside other people’s bodies.

WHAT OSCORP SETS IN MOTION

• The product: Peter’s mutation is treated as a secret Oscorp can unlock and repeat in other human-animal hybrids.
• The missing: Issue #2’s absent employee, teaching assistant, and Queens tech read as the first harvest around that product.
• The competitor: Doctor Octavius builds a second synthetic mutant from the Parker Incident so Spider-Man is not unique.
• The leftover person: By #3 Peter is not learning a motto. He is trying to get his humanity back while the company hunts the legend it made.

Great responsibility assumed a boy who had power and wasted it. This version assumes a boy whose body was taken, copied, and scheduled for replacement. Shops pulling the three books as a set are not wrong to treat that as universe design. It is the same three-flagship logic Marvel used when it wanted a new universe to stick, only the shared idea this time is that hope already had its turn.

Behind Those Cloaked Covers

Main covers ship as Cloaked Covers, the art partly hidden until a reader turns the page; after the debuts, Marvel says the full image stays in shadow until someone picks the book up in a shop. Steve Beach draws the Spider-Man covers and has already shown mask and chest-spider concepts. Variant programs run across the line with repeating A-E themes, plus connecting covers from Clayton Crain and a stack of retailer exclusives still circulating after FOC.

New York shop Midtown Comics is already selling a black-and-white Midnight Universe ashcan as a taste of the three series, which is the quiet version of the same bet: get the horror line into people’s hands before the cloaked #1s hit. Marvel’s own trailer for the line went up with the October 7 date and the three creative teams on the same card.

When those cloaked copies finally come off the counter, the origin Marvel has already written down is not a new costume on the old lesson. It is a company that wanted to live forever, a kid it used as the prototype, and a second monster already in the lab.
