Sahara Ray died in a Los Angeles hospital on October 18 at 34, her family said, eight months after the birth of her daughter. They said she was surrounded by family. They have not named a cause.

She leaves Snow Ray Dow, born at 12:19 a.m. on January 27, 2026. Ray never named the child’s father. Her mother, Gretchen Gia Bach, was in the delivery room.

Sunday Night in a Los Angeles Hospital

Relatives spoke on Monday, October 19. “She passed away last night surrounded by family at the hospital. She was so loved,” they said.

Bach, a Santa Cruz real estate professional, issued her own statement. She called her daughter an incredibly passionate and kind young woman who loved her family, fashion, her daughter Snow, and surfing, and said the family was feeling the love pouring in from friends, fans, and the communities Ray moved through.

Ray was 31 in May 2024 when she posted from a wheelchair. She was 34 when she died. Between those dates she carried a pregnancy, introduced a baby on Instagram, and then went quiet after a July grid post of that child.

The first wave of posts still filed her as a famous ex from a 2016 Hawaii holiday. That frame is easy to search and cheap to write. It leaves the hospital room, and the infant, out of shot.

Who Is Snow Ray Dow?

Snow Ray Dow was born without complications in Los Angeles, Bach wrote in March, two months after the birth. She said the baby had an amazing temperament, that mum and baby had a steady flow of visitors, and that she felt honored to watch Sahara become a mother. She listed her grandma name as Tutu, and noted that Sahara lives in Los Angeles. “Too far,” she added.

Two months ago Snow Ray Dow was born at 12:19am on January 27th. Baby was born without complications and has an amazing temperament. I feel so honored to have been invited to be at the birth and to watch Sahara become a mother.

Ray announced the pregnancy on August 1, 2025. She posted the birth as “Snow Ray 1/27/2026,” and wrote, “I can’t believe I made this little Maricle with my body. I’m so proud and so in love.” In April she put up a video of the newborn with the caption “Baby snow hallelujah.”

Her last Instagram grid post, on July 19, was three pictures of the baby. “My whole heart baby Snow,” she wrote. That post sat for 13 weeks, 91 days, until the family statement. Snow was eight months old, 8 months and 21 days, when her mother died. The surname Dow is on the birth notice. Ray never attached it to a public partner.

THE PEOPLE SHE LEAVES

Person Tie What is public

Tony Ray Father Big-wave surfer from Torquay; ranked No. 11 in 1992

Whoever holds parental rights besides Ray has not stepped forward on the record. The child is the person this death actually changes, and she cannot speak.

She Told Followers She Could Not Walk

On April 8, 2024, Ray said, a drunk driver hit her at 80 miles an hour (128 km an hour). “It basically set my body into shock which sent my body into this crazy sickness and I got really, really sick for a week-and-a-half to two weeks,” she said on TikTok on May 8. She could not keep food down. Five days after that sickness eased, tingling and numbness started in her feet and moved up her legs. “Basically, I couldn’t walk within a week and a half.”

Doctors told her she had Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare attack in which the immune system turns on the nerves. She was 31, with about 947,000 Instagram followers, and she had gone dark because she was, she said, pretty depressed.

WHAT SHE SAID IN MAY 2024

  • The paralysis: She said she was paralysed from the tops of her upper thighs all the way down to her feet and could not walk at all.
  • The gear: She was primarily in a wheelchair, had a walker, and could barely walk with it.
  • The fear: She was trying to keep a good attitude and stay hopeful her feeling would come back, “but there’s always a chance it just stays like this.”
  • The ask: “I’m really hoping and praying that I get to walk again someday.”

On Instagram she wrote, “My whole life changed in an instant,” over clips of wheelchair work and rehab. In one clip she stood and caught a ball. “So thankful for my family and doctors for helping me get stronger everyday,” she said. “Attitude is everything.”

THE ILLNESS, IN CLINIC FIGURES

  • No known cure: Mayo Clinic staff describe Guillain-Barre as an immune attack on the nerves that can bring weakness, numbness, or paralysis, with no known cure.
  • Walking: Most people are able to walk again six months later, though recovery can take several years and some weakness, numbness, or fatigue can last.
  • Full recovery: The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says 70 percent eventually recover fully, while about 30 percent still have residual weakness after three years.
  • Breathing: Mayo says up to 22 percent of patients need a machine to breathe in the first week in hospital, and that death, rarely, can follow breathing failure or heart attack.

Mayo lists trauma among possible triggers, beside infections. Ray tied her own case to the crash. That is her account, not a coroner’s finding, and there is no public medical file tying Guillain-Barre to her death two years later. She later posted standing and moving. She then carried Snow to term.

The 2014 Swim Label and a Surfer Father

Ray was born in Torquay, Victoria, and grew up mostly in Santa Cruz, with winters on Hawaii’s North Shore. “Every winter I would spend three months on the north shore of Hawaii with my dad,” she told a magazine in 2015. “He was a professional surfer, so I used to travel all over the with him while he was competing in the pipe masters and big wave competitions.”

Tony Ray, born in 1965, is the unassuming big-wave rider the Encyclopedia of Surfing calls the Forrest Gump of giant waves, world-ranked No. 11 in 1992, and runner-up at the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau contest at Waimea Bay in 1999 and 2002. She enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles and, in 2014, launched Sahara Ray Swim.

Tabloid fame arrived in August 2016, when paparazzi photographed her in Hawaii with Justin Bieber. She was also linked at times to Cody Simpson, Jordan Barrett, and the musician Mod Sun, with whom she was photographed on November 11, 2023, at an Ashton Michael Atelier event in Los Angeles, her last widely circulated red-carpet appearance. She was close with Lottie Moss. She joined OnlyFans in 2020. In December 2021 she told followers she had checked into a 30-day mental health, wellness, drug and alcohol program; she said the retreat was in Malibu, and that it was day one.

Those are the search terms that still outrank a birth certificate. They are also a decade old, or five years old, and they are not who was in the hospital on October 18.

No Official Cause Has Been Released

The family statement named a hospital and a night. It did not name an illness, an injury, or a drug. Early accounts from people said to be close to her described a fentanyl overdose on Friday, October 16, a rush to a Los Angeles hospital, days on life support, and a decision to take her off that support on Sunday. Those accounts have not been matched by a coroner, a police statement, or the family. It has not been said, even in those accounts, whether any overdose was accidental.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The death: Relatives said she died on the night of October 18 in a Los Angeles hospital, surrounded by family.
  • The child: Snow Ray Dow was born January 27, 2026, in Los Angeles; Ray did not name a father.
  • The prior illness: In May 2024 Ray said Guillain-Barre syndrome followed an April 8 crash and left her unable to walk.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Fentanyl: An unnamed account of a Friday overdose has not been confirmed by the family or by any official record released so far.
  • Life support: The same account said she was on life support until Sunday; the family has not said that.
  • Intent: Even in that account, it is not known whether any overdose was accidental.
  • Guillain-Barre: No public record ties the 2024 nerve illness to the 2026 death.

THE DATES SHE PUT ON THE RECORD

  1. December 2021: She says she has started a 30-day mental health and addiction program, and that it is day one.
  2. November 11, 2023: She appears in Los Angeles with Mod Sun at the Ashton Michael Atelier anniversary.
  3. April 8, 2024: She says a drunk driver hits her at 80 miles an hour.
  4. May 8, 2024: She posts the Guillain-Barre update from a wheelchair.
  5. August 1, 2025: She announces the pregnancy.
  6. January 27, 2026: Snow Ray Dow is born at 12:19 a.m.
  7. July 19, 2026: She posts the last grid photos of Snow.
  8. October 18, 2026: She dies in hospital, her family says.

A 2021 treatment stay does not prove a 2026 overdose. A 2024 nerve illness does not prove a 2026 hospital death. What is solid is narrower: she died, she was 34, and she had an eight-month-old whose other parent she kept off Instagram.

Ruby Ray Asked for More Time

Younger sister Ruby Ray posted childhood pictures on October 19. She called Sahara the most vivacious, intelligent, hilarious, kind, empathetic and breathtakingly beautiful soul, a force of nature, a light so bright that the world felt impossibly dimmer. She wrote that Sahara had moved from this life into another, and that she was trying to comprehend how someone so full of life could no longer be here to live it.

I want more time. More laughter. More conversations. More of her. If love alone could have kept you here, Sahara, you would have lived a thousand lifetimes. I will spend the rest of mine loving you.

Thirty-four is young to leave a daughter who has only just started life. The people now making the next decisions are Bach, Tony Ray, Ruby, and whoever belongs to the name Dow. None of them has said, on the record, who will raise Snow.

Ten years of reporting and then editing taught him that a global readership is not served by assuming everyone lives in the same country. Stories here state currencies, units and time zones explicitly, name the country a law or a company belongs to, and explain local context rather than treating it as known. That care extends to sourcing: a claim is anchored to the filing, statement, transcript or dataset that made it, wherever in the world it was issued, and each figure is checked against that source before publication. The site reports news, business and technology, science and sports, entertainment, lifestyle and travel, and auto and gaming, all with the same standard of evidence.
