Purdy’s Record Night Almost Became Another 28-3
49ers survive a 20-point scare against Dan Quinn to go 6-0, as Brock Purdy claims the NFL passer rating record.
Brock Purdy became the NFL’s highest-rated passer on Oct. 19, and the 49ers still needed two late stops to beat Washington 23-17. San Francisco moved to 6-0 at Levi’s Stadium after a 20-point lead shrank to six and the offense spent the second half in reverse.
The other sideline belonged to Dan Quinn, the head coach Kyle Shanahan worked under when Atlanta blew Super Bowl LI. The rating is now official. The finish was a scramble.
The Super Bowl That Followed Them to Santa Clara
Shanahan spent 2015 and 2016 as Quinn’s offensive coordinator in Atlanta, a run that ended on Feb. 5, 2017, when a 28-3 lead became a 34-28 overtime loss to New England. He has said Quinn taught him the people side of the job, the team-meeting work that used to feel like wasted scheme time. On Oct. 19 those two stood opposite each other again, this time as head coaches, and the old shape of the night came back in miniature.
Quinn’s Falcons beat Shanahan 29-22 in 2019, the only prior meeting with both men in the big chair. Shanahan then took three from Quinn’s Dallas defenses, including a 23-17 wild-card win in 2021 and a 42-10 Sunday night blowout in 2023. This was the fifth game in the series and the first since Quinn took the Washington job. It ended 23-17, the same numbers as that 2021 playoff night, after a lead that reached 23-3.
THE SHANAHAN-QUINN FILE
- 2015-16: Shanahan calls plays for Quinn’s Falcons.
- Feb. 5, 2017: Super Bowl LI slips from 28-3 to 34-28 in overtime.
- 2019: Quinn’s Atlanta side wins 29-22 in the only prior head-to-head.
- 2021-23: Shanahan beats Quinn’s Cowboys defense three times, 23-17 in the wild card and 42-10 on a Sunday night.
- Oct. 19, 2026: Shanahan holds on 23-17; they sit 1-1 as head coaches.
Shanahan did not dress it up as a statement. He talked about stamina, and about a defense that had to finish a game the offense had stopped moving.
You’re not always happy exactly with how some of the stuff was frustrating, but real proud of the guys for just the competitive stamina to keep it going all game. I was really proud of the defense for finding a way to overcome.
Kyle Shanahan, 49ers head coach, postgame at Levi’s Stadium
Quinn put the first half on his own sideline. “San Francisco’s already a tough team and we spent way too much time in the first half battling ourselves,” he said. “I’m sick about the ending, but we showed a lot of fight.”
Purdy Crossed 1,500 Attempts and Took the Record
Purdy walked in with 1,495 career attempts, five short of the cutoff the league uses for official career passer rating. His fifth throw of the night was No. 1,500. The next one was an 11-yard touchdown to George Kittle, finishing a nine-play, 64-yard opening drive at 10:53 of the first quarter, and the record was no longer a projection.
He finished 21 of 29 for 264 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions, a 111.9 rating for the game. The career line is now 1,038 of 1,524 (68.1 percent) for 13,145 yards, 98 touchdowns, and 39 interceptions in 55 games, 8.6 yards per attempt. That produces a 105.6 rating, 2.9 points above Lamar Jackson’s 102.7, on the all-time passer rating among qualifiers.

THE ALL-TIME PASSER RATING LIST
| Quarterback | Rating | Attempts | TDs-INTs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brock Purdy | 105.6 | 1,524 | 98-39 |
| Lamar Jackson | 102.7 | 2,984 | 193-57 |
| Aaron Rodgers | 101.8 | 8,976 | 539-128 |
| Joe Burrow | 101.3 | 2,995 | 168-54 |
| Patrick Mahomes | 100.8 | 4,831 | 276-88 |
Jackson has thrown 2,984 passes in 120 games, almost twice Purdy’s 1,524, so the sample is the smallest in that top five and will move every Sunday. The list still has a Shanahan fingerprint further down: Jimmy Garoppolo, the previous Santa Clara starter, ranks 10th at 97.6. Purdy was the last pick of the 2022 draft. The math no longer needs a footnote about attempts.
He was blunt about the second half. “I’m obviously a little upset with how I finish the game,” Purdy said. “But I know that moving forward, every single game matters when it comes down to playoffs and getting in and all the things. So we’ll take this W as a team.”
Seventeen First Downs, Then Three After Halftime
The first two drives were touchdowns, Purdy to Kittle and a 1-yard run by Christian McCaffrey, and Eddy Pineiro’s missed extra point after the second score left it 13-3 instead of 14-3. McCaffrey punched another 1-yarder with 13 seconds left in the half for 20-3. By then San Francisco had 17 first downs, as many as Washington had plays, and had outgained the Commanders 303 yards to 90.
McCaffrey finished with 16 carries for 64 yards and those two scores, plus nine catches for 53 yards, 117 yards from scrimmage. Mike Evans, on the third play of the game, ripped a 24-yard catch and later left with Achilles tendinitis after three receptions for 94 yards. Shanahan said Evans would not need more testing and that the tendon problem, after a week of soreness and broken ribs, is not expected to linger. Without him the second half produced three first downs and 72 yards.
FIRST HALF VS. SECOND HALF
| Stat | First half | Second half |
|---|---|---|
| 49ers yards | 303 | 72 |
| 49ers first downs | 17 | 3 |
| Points added | SF 20, WAS 3 | SF 3, WAS 14 |
Pineiro’s 33-yard field goal at 5:56 of the third made it 23-3, the 20-point lead. Jayden Daniels then threw a 1-yard score to Stefon Diggs with 15 seconds left in the quarter and a 9-yarder to Rachaad White at 9:22 of the fourth, 23-17. Daniels went 29 of 40 for 300 yards and those two scores, no picks, a 110.4 rating. Washington won total time of possession 30:15 to 29:45 and lost the yardage fight 314 to 375. The 49ers’ only turnover sat next to a Commanders line of zero.
Washington’s best first-half chance died on fourth-and-2 from the 13, when Daniels threw the ball away. The Commanders (1-4-1) had just come off a tie with the New York Giants in which they ran out the overtime clock before a field-goal try. Quinn’s team can move in bursts. It has not yet played four even quarters.
Mustapha Gets There First
Malik Mustapha, the safety who had already set a physical tone in the Oct. 11 win at Seattle, closed this one with two plays after Washington had scored 14 straight. A facemask wiped out a 31-yard Jeremy McNichols run that would have tied the game, turning the next snap into first-and-19. Mustapha then dropped McNichols for no gain on third-and-3 from the 17, just before the two-minute warning, and drew Treylon Burks on fourth down near the front right corner of the end zone with 1:54 left.
I’m just reading the stem of the receiver, and then he broke out, and I was just trying to race to the pylon. Once we got to the catch point, I just wanted to be physical at the point of attack and get that ball out.
Malik Mustapha, 49ers safety, postgame at Levi’s Stadium
THE LAST FOUR WASHINGTON CHANCES
- The wiped score: A facemask erases McNichols’ 31-yard run that would have tied it at 23.
- Third-and-3: Mustapha stops McNichols for no gain from the 17 before the two-minute warning.
- Fourth down, 1:54: Mustapha breaks up Daniels’ pass to Burks at the pylon.
- The last snap: Washington starts at its 46 with 52 seconds, reaches the 28, takes an intentional-grounding flag, and Daniels is sacked at the 40 by Keion White and Ogbo Okoronkwo before a Hail Mary can go up.
A 6-0 team can still look shaky when 72 second-half yards meet a 1-4-1 roster that has already given the league one clock fiasco this month. The historic passer did not sit on the lead. The safety did. Daniels saw the hole they had dug before halftime and the way it returned at the end. “We dug ourselves in a hole, and it bit us at the end of it,” he said. “We have to be a four-quarter team, not just a half team.”
Quinn Fears a Significant Knee Injury
Terry McLaurin, 31, was carted off with an air cast on his left leg late in the first quarter and was ruled out on the spot. He had already caught a 27-yard ball on the opening drive, the play that set up Drew Stevens’ 51-yard field goal, and he was running an out against Deommodore Lenoir on third-and-9 when the knee gave. Contact was light. He grabbed the joint as he went down, trailing 13-3.
Quinn said the concern “could be significant,” that “there’s fear,” and that McLaurin would be scanned on Oct. 20. Ian Rapoport said the Commanders are bracing to learn the injury will end his season, which is a warning rather than a diagnosis until those scans are public. McLaurin now has 15 catches for 230 yards and one touchdown in 2026 after missing the London game against Indianapolis with a hamstring. Washington gets a bye, then hosts Philadelphia on Nov. 1.
Daniels called him a brother and said McLaurin had stayed with him through a hard 2025 and a 1-4-1 start. Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw also left with a knee injury. San Francisco lost linebacker Luke Gifford (groin) and defensive back Upton Stout (shoulder) on top of Evans. A crowd of 71,561 watched a game that was supposed to be a showcase and turned into a medical cart and a goal-line pile.
Sunday’s Trip to Atlanta Comes With a 2019 Echo
This is San Francisco’s best start since the 2019 team won its first eight on the way to a Super Bowl. That club also had to live with late leads and a Shanahan offense that could go cold in the wrong half. The 2026 group has 177 points through six games (29.5 per night, third in the league) and has allowed 110 (18.3, fourth), and it is 4-0 at home and 3-0 in the NFC West. Seattle sits at 3-3. Arizona and the Rams are 2-4. The Vikings and Chiefs are 5-0. Nobody else is 6-0.
THE ROAD AFTER 6-0
- Oct. 25: At Atlanta (2-4), 1 p.m. ET, then a Week 8 bye.
- November: Raiders at home, at Dallas, Minnesota in Mexico City, Seattle at home.
- December to January: At the Giants, Rams at home, at the Chargers, at Kansas City, Philadelphia at home, at Arizona.
The Sunday trip to Atlanta is a date with the franchise that still owns 28-3, and with a Falcons team that is 2-4. San Francisco can take a 7-0 record into the bye if the second half in Santa Clara stays a one-off. If the 72-yard half is the new pattern, the rating on Purdy’s page will not be the thing that gets tested first. The next test is already on the calendar, in the building where Shanahan and Quinn once worked the other way.
