Marvel Ends Daredevil Born Again After a Defenders Reunion

Marvel is closing Daredevil Born Again after Season 3, which already filmed a Defenders reunion, after telling Charlie Cox to stay on the Disney+ show.

Marvel has decided Daredevil: Born Again will end with its third season, which has already finished filming for a 2027 Disney+ run. Charlie Cox is back as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, and sources said the studio is not ordering a fourth season.

The same decision left showrunner Dario Scardapane off the series in the middle of post work, after Marvel chose not to renew his contract. That is a strange way to close a show it spent years pulling into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Season 3 Will Be the Last

The call became public on September 21, 2026, about two months after cameras stopped. Marvel had no comment. One source said post work is in its final stages, and it is unclear who will finish the cut.

THE DECISION AS IT STANDS

  • The ending: Season 3 is the last, and it is still due on Disney+ in 2027.
  • The timing: Filming had been wrapped for about two months when sources described the decision.
  • The showrunner: Scardapane’s contract was up, Marvel did not renew it, and he left during post.
  • The studio line: Marvel had no comment.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Who finishes the mix: No replacement has been named to see Season 3 through.
  • New photography: It is unknown whether Marvel will shoot extra material so the season can play as a close.
  • Cox after 2027: There is no announced Daredevil film, and he has said he is not in the next Avengers movie.

Season 2, which began on March 24, 2026, ended with Murdock sent to prison. That is the story Season 3 already shot, whether or not anyone now tries to sand it into a finale. Calling the move a yank misses that point. Calling it a planned goodbye misses the other one: they took the showrunner off a season that was still being put together.

Marvel Told Charlie Cox to Stay Put

The easy read is that Daredevil is leaving TV for the films. Cox has spent a year saying the opposite. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast in May 2026, while Season 3 was shooting, he said Marvel had been direct with him.

Marvel have kind of been clear with me, for now at least, that I’m focusing on the show. That’s our focus. That really is the truth.

Charlie Cox, Daredevil: Born Again star, on the Happy Sad Confused podcast

He is not in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which reached theaters in July 2026 with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher in the mix. At MCM Comic Con in August, asked about Avengers: Secret Wars, Cox said, “No, I’m not going to be in it, no. Sorry. And you can believe me now.”

The revival still lists him as a blind lawyer fighting for justice while Fisk chases a political life in New York. That was the job. Marvel kept him off the movie board so he could do it. Then it closed the job.

They Shot a Defenders Reunion as the Finale

Season 3 is not a small leftover. Set photos from April 3, 2026, showed Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones with Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Danny Rand, the first time that group had been photographed together for Marvel since the Netflix years. Élodie Yung later turned up as Elektra Natchios, a character last seen in that older street-level run.

Wilson Bethel is back as Bullseye, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and the rest of the Born Again company stayed in place. Colter had already stepped into the Season 2 finale. The third season was built to widen that world, not to pack it away.

WHO STILL GETS A LAST RUN

  • Matt Murdock: Cox, picking up from the prison turn that closed Season 2.
  • Wilson Fisk: D’Onofrio, still the other half of the show’s main fight.
  • Jessica Jones: Ritter, who joined in Season 2 and filmed again in April.
  • Luke Cage and Iron Fist: Colter and Jones, shot together with Ritter in New York.
  • Elektra Natchios: Yung, photographed on the Season 3 set later in the shoot.

Those hours were logged as a continuation. Viewers will now watch them as a goodbye, months before the episodes land. A retitled Daredevil show could still appear later. Sources said nothing is on the books after this 2027 run.

Why the Showrunner Left in Post

Scardapane did not drift away from a finished cut. His deal ended, Marvel passed on a new one, and he left while the season was still in post. For a series that already survived one gutting, that is a familiar kind of mess.

FROM THE 18-EPISODE ORDER TO A LAST SEASON

  1. July 2022: Marvel greenlights an 18-episode Born Again order with Matt Corman and Chris Ord as head writers.
  2. 2023: The shoot stops in the strikes, and Marvel resets the show. Corman and Ord go. Scardapane, a writer from Netflix’s Punisher, comes in as showrunner, with Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as directors.
  3. March 4, 2025: Season 1 arrives on Disney+. The old 18-episode order has been split into 17 episodes, nine in Season 1 and eight in Season 2.
  4. 2015 to 2018: Netflix’s Daredevil, with the same two leads, also stopped after three seasons.
  5. March 24, 2026: Season 2 begins. Marvel had already confirmed a third season the previous fall.
  6. September 21, 2026: Sources say Season 3 is the last, and Scardapane is gone in post.

The first-season rebuild is why Born Again looks like the Netflix show instead of the lighter, more episodic take Corman and Ord had started. Scardapane was the person hired to make that turn stick. Dropping him before the mix is done does not read like a limited series that always knew where it ended.

Season 2 Lost Viewers and Still Led Disney+

Marvel can point at two different piles of numbers, and both are real. Luminate’s launch windows show a steep drop from Season 1 to Season 2. Its calendar tally for the first half of 2026 then ranks that same Season 2 as Disney+’s most-streamed original in the United States.

LUMINATE, FIRST FIVE WEEKS

Measure Season 1 Season 2
Season views 8,357,000 4,515,000
Hours watched 24,000,000 10,867,000
Opening-week views 1,904,000 927,000

That is a 46% drop in views and a 54% drop in hours over the same five-week span. Across nine Season 1 episodes and eight Season 2 episodes, the show also went 0-for-17 on Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 streaming originals list. Secret Invasion made that list. Born Again did not.

From January through June 2026, a different Luminate cut puts Season 2 at 2.3 billion minutes, ahead of Wonder Man at 1.9 billion and ahead of Born Again Season 1’s 1.3 billion in that same half-year, which includes catalog viewing. Disney+ never posted its own totals. A show can lead a thin app slate and still miss the Nielsen bar the studio uses to brag.

Wonder Man is the cleaner comparison on process. Disney picked up a second season in March, never opened a writers’ room, and killed the pickup on July 30, 2026. Born Again is the messier version: the next season is shot, the showrunner is out, and the ending arrives as a memo.

Nothing Is on the Books After 2027

Marvel Television has been cutting live-action volume for Disney+. Brad Winderbaum, already the television and animation chief and an executive producer on Born Again, was named Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics and Franchise on May 18, 2026. The live-action list that remains is short.

LIVE-ACTION MARVEL STILL DATED

Show What it is Window
VisionQuest Paul Bettany, last part of the WandaVision run October 14, 2026
Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 Final season, already filmed 2027
Zodiac Greenlit spy thriller, title unexplained No date

Marvel Television has dated VisionQuest for October 14, 2026 on Disney+, with James Spader back as Ultron and Terry Matalas as showrunner. It is billed as the close of a trilogy, not the start of a new one. Sources said the company still keeps three to five live-action shows in development and has greenlit a spy thriller under the name Zodiac, a comics label tied to a constellation-themed group that fights S.H.I.E.L.D. Animation is a separate pile, with X-Men ’97 and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man still moving.

Cox still has a season in the can. It will show the street-level cast Marvel just put back on camera. After that, the show that was supposed to be his job is done, and the films he was told to skip have not made room.

Stories here state currencies, units and time zones explicitly, name the country a law or a company belongs to, and explain local context rather than treating it as known. That care extends to sourcing: a claim is anchored to the filing, statement, transcript or dataset that made it, wherever in the world it was issued, and each figure is checked against that source before publication.
