Pixel Buds Firmware 6.144 Ties New Features to Pixel Gear
Firmware 6.144 adds Dynamic ANC on Pixel Buds Pro 2, while sleep pause needs a Pixel Watch and tap-to-mute needs a Pixel phone.
Google began rolling out Pixel Buds firmware release_6.144 on October 6, 2026, for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a. Dynamic Active Noise Cancellation is the Pro 2 exclusive. The other four additions lean on a Pixel Watch, a Pixel phone, Gemini, or Google Translate.
The original Pixel Buds Pro is not on the live list. Google’s community post was edited, and a product expert told one owner the drop is for the Buds 2 series.
Two Models on Google’s List
JpegPixel, a Community Specialist on the Pixel Buds help forum, posted the rollout note and signed it as the Google Pixel Buds Team. The post sells software release_6.144 for Pixel Buds as a “massive” package of “highly anticipated features and AI-powered upgrades.”
The breakdown under that headline names two products, again and again. Pixel Buds Pro 2. Pixel Buds 2a. Dynamic ANC is marked exclusive to the Pro 2. Enhanced Live Translate, Gemini voice commands, Tap to Mute, and auto-pause while sleeping are listed for both.
Google said the firmware will install on its own once it reaches a given pair. It also told owners to update the earbuds and the Android phone. The note was last edited by Rebecca V., and the version now on the page does not mention the 2022 Pixel Buds Pro.
Sleep Pause Lives on the Pixel Watch
Call this an earbuds update and you miss who actually does the new work. Four of the five items in 6.144 need another Google product or app before they do anything. The buds are the speaker and the button. The Watch, the phone, Gemini, and Translate carry the brains.
WHAT EACH 6.144 FEATURE NEEDS
| Feature | Pro 2 | 2a | Extra need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamic ANC | Yes | No | None listed |
| Enhanced Live Translate | Yes | Yes | Translate app, select countries |
| Gemini voice commands | Yes | Yes | Gemini app, Google Account, internet |
| Tap to Mute | Yes | Yes | Pixel phones only |
| Auto-pause while sleeping | Yes | Yes | Pixel Watch sleep sensing |
Sleep is the clearest case. Google said the buds “can rest when you do,” but the Watch is the sensor. Sleep sensing on a Pixel Watch decides that you have drifted off. Then the buds pause playback, turn off touch gestures, and silence notifications. No Watch on the wrist means no sleep pause, on either model. The fine print also says the Pixel Buds app is required.
Tap to Mute is the same pattern on the phone side. A tap on the bud mutes or unmutes the microphone during calls, and Google limited it to Pixel phones. Pair the same 2a or Pro 2 with another Android brand and that gesture stays out of reach. Gemini needs the Gemini mobile app, a Google Account, and an internet connection, and Google warned that features can differ by subscription and account. Live Translate still runs through the Google Translate app, in select countries and languages, and Google said results may vary.
Only the Pro 2 Gets Dynamic ANC
The one upgrade that lives on the buds themselves is Dynamic ANC, and it stays on the Pro 2. Google’s description is short: the buds now adjust audio or noise cancellation based on the ear seal. If a bud shifts and the seal changes, the firmware compensates instead of holding one fixed level.
Your buds will now automatically adjust audio or noise cancellation based on your ear seal.

That is a fit problem, not a room problem. Chewing, a run, or a long call can move a bud a few millimetres. Older ANC just kept pumping at the old strength. Dynamic ANC retunes when the seal slips.
Google has not said the 2a will get this later. The Pro 2 is also the model Google built around a custom-designed Tensor A1 chip, which Bill Park, product manager for Pixel Buds, introduced in August 2024 as the engine for faster ANC processing. Those buds adapt to the environment up to 3 million times per second, with ANC Google called twice as strong as the prior generation. They launched at $229, went on sale September 26, 2024, and were 24% lighter and 27% smaller than the original Pixel Buds Pro, after 45 million ear-scan data points. Battery life with ANC on is up to 8 hours in the buds and 30 hours with the case. A 15-minute case charge adds up to three hours.
What Gemini Can Change by Voice
Voice control of the buds did not wait for 6.144. In late September the Pixel Buds app gained a Gemini hook, so owners could change EQ, ANC, conversation detection, and touch controls by speaking. Google’s own example is still the simplest one: “Hey Google, turn up the bass.” Firmware 6.144 repeats those commands and pushes them onto more pairs as the update lands.
The rest of the package was promised two months earlier, next to a new Olive finish for the Pro 2. Google said software updates start rolling out in September. The app piece did. The firmware with Dynamic ANC, sleep pause, tap-to-mute, and the Live Translate gesture started on October 6.
Pixel Buds are getting even better with new features, plus a new Olive finish for Pixel Buds Pro 2. Here’s what’s new:

FROM THE AUGUST TEASE TO 6.144
- August 13, 2024: Pixel Buds Pro 2 are announced at $229 with Tensor A1 and Gemini in the buds.
- August 12, 2026: Google teases Dynamic ANC, Gemini audio control, Pixel Watch sleep sync, and Live Translate in over 70 languages, plus Olive, with software due in September.
- Late September 2026: The Pixel Buds app starts handing ANC, EQ, and touch settings to Gemini on the phone.
- October 6, 2026: Firmware release_6.144 begins rolling out to Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a.
Enhanced Live Translate is the travel item in that list. A touch on the bud starts translation through the Google Translate app, so the phone can stay in a pocket. Listening mode covers speech around you. Conversation mode still uses the Pixel phone to play your words back in the other person’s language. Google pointed to g.co/pixel/livetranslate for the limits, including that translation may not be instant and is not available for all media or apps.
Original Pixel Buds Pro Are Left Out
Owners of the 2022 Pixel Buds Pro have the most boring outcome: they are not named. One person on the thread asked whether those buds would get the firmware at all.
This update is for the Buds 2 series, as stated in the blog. If the Buds Pro will receive an update, it will be announced as a blog post.

That is as close to a no as Google has given. Tap-to-mute, the control several owners wanted on day one, lands here instead, two years after the Pro 2 shipped, and only on Pixel phones. The 2a, the cheaper model on the same list, gets four of the five features. The 2022 flagship gets none of them in this drop.
Prime Cuts the Flagship to $170.05
The firmware arrived in the same window as Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days, which is a retailer sale, not a new Google list price. Prime listings put the Pixel Buds Pro 2 on the Google Store product at $170.05, down from the $229 list, a 26% discount on Amazon’s tag.
THE OCTOBER PRICE ON PIXEL BUDS PRO 2
- List price: $229, the same figure Google set at the August 2024 preorder.
- Prime tag: $170.05 during Prime Big Deal Days.
- Discount on the tag: 26% off, a retailer promotion, not a permanent cut.
- Firmware in the box: release_6.144 still arrives through the Pixel Buds app, not as a new SKU.
Buy the Pro 2 on that tag and you get Dynamic ANC when 6.144 lands. You still need a Pixel Watch for sleep pause and a Pixel phone for tap-to-mute. The 2a sits in a stranger spot: it inherits the Watch and phone features, and it never gets Dynamic ANC.
Check the Pixel Buds App for 6.144
The rollout is gradual. A day after the community post, at least one owner on the US East Coast still had no update. Google’s advice is to update the buds and the phone and wait for the package to show up. If you want to poke it, the Pixel Buds app is the place.
CHECK FOR RELEASE_6.144
- Update the app: Install the latest Pixel Buds app on the paired Android phone.
- Open firmware: Connect the earbuds, then go to More settings and Firmware.
- Check for updates: Run the check and confirm the installed build is release_6.144.
- Read the feature list: Dynamic ANC should appear only on Pixel Buds Pro 2; the other four items list Pro 2 and 2a, with the Watch and Pixel-phone notes attached.
Google said the package is meant for a noisy train, a trip, or a night when you fall asleep with audio still playing. The train part is the Pro 2 seal trick. The night part is a Watch on your wrist. The mute tap is a Pixel in your pocket. Until 6.144 reaches a given pair, none of that is on the buds you already own.
