Apple put its first 2nm chip in the Mac mini that starts at $899, and parked the faster-core M5 Pro in the $1,699 model. Pre-orders opened August 25, with customer shipments set to begin September 22.

There is no M6 Pro in the store. Buyers who want more GPU cores, 64GB of memory, or Thunderbolt 5 still take an M5-generation chip, while the volume box becomes the 2nm proving ground.

Apple Put 2nm in the Cheap Mac Mini

The naming looks backwards until you look at die size. M6 is the new small chip, built for the $899 cube. M5 Pro is the larger chip already used in MacBook Pro, now dropped into the same 5-inch shell with more cores, more memory, and faster ports.

Sri Santhanam, Apple’s vice president of Silicon Engineering, introduced M6 as Apple’s first 2 nm chip and put the halo silicon of the day, M5 Ultra, in Mac Studio. The cheap desktop got the new node. The expensive mini did not.

Super Cores and a Dual Neural Engine

M6’s 12-core CPU is two cores larger than M5, split into two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores. Apple says that mix delivers the world’s fastest single-threaded performance, up to 1.2x faster multithreaded work than M5, and up to 2.4x faster than M1.

Built using the cutting-edge 2 nm process, M6 combines a new CPU complex, two additional CPU and GPU cores, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and more unified memory bandwidth to power through workloads with amazing energy efficiency.

Sri Santhanam, Vice President of Silicon Engineering, Apple

The 12-core GPU puts a Neural Accelerator in each core. Apple pegs peak GPU compute for AI at nearly 30 percent above M5 and more than 8x M1. Unified memory bandwidth rises 10 percent over M5 to 170GB/s, which is 2.5x the M1 figure. Geometry rates rise 50 percent. The Dual 16-core Neural Engine is rated at up to 2x the peak compute of the prior engine, and system frameworks can run both engines at once.

APPLE’S M6 TEST CLAIMS VERSUS M4 MINI

  • AI headline: Up to 4x faster AI and 2x faster graphics, plus 40 percent faster CPU, versus Mac mini with M4.
  • LM Studio prompts: Up to 4.8x faster LLM prompt processing than M4, and up to 13.5x faster than M1.
  • Excel: Up to 1.5x faster spreadsheet calculations than M4, and up to 2.3x faster than M1.
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Up to 2x faster ray-traced play in Ultimate Edition versus M4.

Those up to 4x faster AI performance numbers sit next to a quieter M5 Pro sheet: up to 4x faster LM Studio prompts than M4 Pro, up to 1.4x faster Blender ray-traced renders, and up to 1.5x faster Affinity image work. Storage is rated 2x faster than the M4 mini on both new models.

16GB Still Caps the On-Device Model

Apple is selling the cube as an always-on box for local agents, and Johny Srouji, chief hardware officer, said as much. The memory map did not move with the node. M6 still tops out at 32GB. M5 Pro still tops out at 64GB. The $899 machine ships with 16GB.

The 4.8x LM Studio figure is prompt processing, the wait before the first token, which is what Neural Accelerators are built to cut. Generation speed still tracks memory bandwidth, and 170GB/s is a 10 percent bump over M5, not a new class of pipe. A 16GB board leaves a thin slice for a large local model once macOS and the apps are running. Buyers who actually want 70-class weights still have to climb the M5 Pro memory options, or leave the mini for Studio.

That is the squeeze inside Apple’s agent pitch. The new silicon makes prefill cheaper. It does not raise the ceiling on what fits.

Why the Mini Now Costs $899

The M6 mini starts at $899, or $74.91 a month for 12 months. Education pricing is $799. M5 Pro starts at $1,699, or $1,599 for education. The M4 mini that this machine replaces launched at $599 on October 29, 2024, so the new floor is $300 higher than that start.

MAC MINI ENTRY PRICE

  1. 2020: M1 Mac mini starts at $699, per the original U.S. Mac mini launch prices.
  2. January 2023: M2 Mac mini starts at $599.
  3. October 29, 2024: M4 Mac mini starts at $599 with 16GB of unified memory.
  4. August 25, 2026: M6 Mac mini starts at $899; M5 Pro starts at $1,699.

M4 Pro launched at $1,399, so the M5 Pro mini is also $300 above that older Pro start. The $899 box is still the cheapest Mac desktop, and it no longer looks like a budget one. Replies to the launch fixated on that $300 gap, and on the $599 M4 as the machine people actually miss.

Genlock Ties the Mini to iPhone 17 Pro

The shell is unchanged: 5.0 inches wide, 5.0 inches deep, 2.0 inches tall (12.7 x 12.7 x 5.0 cm). M6 weighs 1.5 pounds (0.67 kg). M5 Pro weighs 1.6 pounds (0.73 kg). Silver only. The enclosure uses 100 percent recycled aluminum, and Apple says the product is 50 percent recycled material overall.

PORTS AND WIRELESS

  • Front: Two USB-C ports at USB 3 (10Gb/s) and a 3.5 mm jack with high-impedance headphone support.
  • M6 rear: Three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, and 2.5Gb Ethernet, with 10Gb Ethernet as a build option.
  • M5 Pro rear: Three Thunderbolt 5 ports at up to 120Gb/s, HDMI, and the same Ethernet choices.
  • Wireless: Apple N1 chip, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

New genlock over USB-C syncs a display to a camera, including iPhone 17 Pro. Thunderbolt 5 on the Pro model can cluster several minis to run large on-device models. M6 drives up to three external displays. Both machines ship with macOS 27, which Apple is calling Golden Gate, plus the next round of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.

THE CUBE IN NUMBERS

  • Max power: 155W continuous.
  • Idle sound: 5 dBA at the operator position.
  • In the box: The computer and a 1.8 m power cord.
  • Footprint: Less than half the size of Mac mini with M1, Apple says.

You still buy your own display, keyboard, and mouse. That was true of every mini in this chassis, and it is how Apple keeps the sticker under four figures.

Mac Studio Got the Quad-Die Chip Instead

The same August 25 briefing gave Mac Studio M5 Ultra, Apple’s first quad-die M-series chip, with up to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth, and up to 512GB of unified memory. UltraFusion now bonds two dual-die M5 Max chips at over 4.4TB/s. That is the machine for models that will not fit in 64GB.

Mac mini has always been our most versatile Mac. Whether it’s being used as a home computer, powering a professional studio, or as an always-on agentic device, it’s the little Mac that can do it all. Today, we’re taking this versatility even further.

Johny Srouji, Chief Hardware Officer, Apple

Srouji’s other line is the product map in one breath: M6 for the new AI floor, M5 Pro for an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU in the same shell. Pre-orders that opened August 25 in 30 countries are still the live path, and Apple said the machines begin arriving September 22.

Stories here state currencies, units and time zones explicitly, name the country a law or a company belongs to, and explain local context rather than treating it as known. That care extends to sourcing: a claim is anchored to the filing, statement, transcript or dataset that made it, wherever in the world it was issued, and each figure is checked against that source before publication.
