Marvin Harrison Jr. passed his Houston physical on Oct. 12, and Arizona’s 2024 fourth overall pick is now a Texan for a 2027 second-round choice. The Cardinals sent Harrison and a 2027 sixth-round pick to Houston and took back that second plus a 2027 seventh-rounder that first belonged to the San Francisco 49ers.

He is 24. He finished in Arizona with 108 catches, 1,578 yards and 13 touchdowns in 33 games, and he now plays with C.J. Stroud, his quarterback at Ohio State.

Arizona Takes a 2027 Second for the No. 4 Pick

General manager Monti Ossenfort put the club’s explanation in one statement, short enough to fit on a release and thin enough to leave the draft math sitting in the open.

Decisions like this are never easy. Ultimately, we have to do what is best for our football team and that will always be the driving factor. We are extremely grateful to Marvin for what he has contributed to our organization and wish him the very best as he moves forward in his career.

Monti Ossenfort, Cardinals general manager, team statement

The return is the 2027 second-round and seventh-round picks, with Arizona sending a 2027 sixth the other way. Sunday’s first accounts had those late-round picks flipped. By Monday the Cardinals were the club mailing the sixth and keeping the seventh.

A receiver taken fourth overall in 2024 was, two seasons and four games later, priced like a Day 2 pick. Insider Jordan Schultz said Arizona spent the weekend still hoping a first-round choice might appear, and that Harrison had already been told he was going to be moved.

THE WEEKEND ARIZONA MOVED HIM

  1. October 10, 2026: The Cardinals inform Harrison he will be inactive against Detroit while a trade is finished, and they keep listening for a first-round offer.
  2. October 11, 2026: DeMeco Ryans confirms the deal after Houston beats Tennessee 26-3, and Arizona loses 45-21 to the Lions without him.
  3. October 12, 2026: Harrison passes his physical, the sixth- and seventh-rounders are finalized, and Houston puts him on the 53.

Ossenfort did not name a scheme problem, a quarterback problem, or a production problem. The pick package did that work for him.

The Texans Were 0-4 When Talks Got Serious

Ryans closed his postgame session in Nashville by answering the question that had been hanging over the locker room all afternoon. “You guys want to know, huh? Yes, we traded for Marvin Harrison. See ya,” he said.

Stroud had just gone 26 of 34 for 261 yards with a passing touchdown and a rushing score in a 26-3 win over the Titans, Houston’s first of the season. The Texans were 0-4 when the talks got heavy and 1-4 when the coach said the thing out loud.

Other clubs had checked in, including the Colts, Raiders and Ravens, but the only negotiations that went deep were with Houston. Arizona’s floor was a second-round pick. Houston had tried to slide that pick into 2028, then surrendered the 2027 second after the Titans game.

Sitting a deactivated former top pick through a 1-4 start would have driven the asking price down again before the Nov. 10 deadline. Houston, coming off four losses, paid the number Arizona had set as the minimum. The Cardinals are 1-4 after the Lions night and are already built like a club that will keep selling.

What Arizona Got From Harrison in 33 Games

The career line is not empty. It is also not the line a fourth overall receiver is supposed to leave behind in October of year three.

HARRISON’S CARDINALS RECEIVING LINE

Season Games Catches Yards TDs
2024 17 62 885 8
2025 12 41 608 4
2026 4 5 85 1
Total 33 108 1,578 13

He started 30 of those 33 games. The Texans’ own ledger lists 108 receptions for 1,578 yards and 13 scores, 14.6 yards a catch. As a rookie he saw 116 targets and played 78.9 percent of the offensive snaps. Those eight touchdowns tied the franchise record for rookies, and only Anquan Boldin (101 catches, 1,377 yards in 2003) had more production by a Cardinals first-year receiver.

In his first two seasons he had 103 catches, 1,493 yards and 12 touchdowns in 29 games. Only Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald (18) and Sonny Randle (16) had more touchdown catches in a Cardinals player’s first two years. Then 2025 brought four inactive games and a drop to 41 catches on 73 targets.

This season he caught 5 of 13 targets for 85 yards and one score. He still played 73.8 percent of the snaps through four games, a share that no longer matched the ball. He hired new agents. The usage kept shrinking anyway, and by Saturday he was already out of the Lions plan.

The Remaining Years on Harrison’s Rookie Deal

The football argument is the pick swap. The money argument is why Houston could make it.

WHAT IS LEFT ON THE ROOKIE CONTRACT

  • Original deal: Four years, $35,374,742 fully guaranteed, $8,843,686 a year, signed after the 2024 draft.
  • Already paid: Arizona has paid $25,745,027, or 72.8 percent of the contract, per Over The Cap.
  • Dead cap in Arizona: $8,871,268 this season and $5,636,771 in 2027, $14,508,039 in all.
  • Houston’s bill: A salary-cap charge of $776,389 this season, then $5,618,829 in 2027 on a $1,190,000 base salary and a $4,428,829 roster bonus.

The two remaining years on the books cost Houston $6,395,218 in cap charges. That is how a fourth overall pick becomes a second-round buy. Most of the check is already cashed in the desert, and the new team is taking the years that are left, plus a fifth-year option decision after this season.

Stroud Called Him the Hardest Worker He Knows

The football reason Houston paid the second is not a scouting report from 2024. It is a 2022 season in Columbus. With Stroud as the starter, Harrison caught 77 passes for 1,263 yards and 14 touchdowns. Over his last two college years he put up more than 2,400 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns. They were teammates in 2021 and 2022.

Stroud did not talk like a man who needed convincing.

I think he brings a dynamic playmaker. Somebody who runs great routes, can catch really any ball. I loved him in college. He’s probably the hardest worker I’ve ever been around in my life. And just who he is off the field, he’s a great dude, quiet guy, but definitely, you feel his presence. I’m excited to get him in here and get him learning and get him around the other guys. It’s perfect for him. I think fresh starts are good, so I’m excited to get him with us.

C.J. Stroud, Texans quarterback, after Houston’s 26-3 win over Tennessee

Ryans pointed at the same history. He called Harrison a player who crushed college records, with multiple 1,000-yard seasons and All-America status, and he said the rapport with Stroud from Ohio State should shorten the install. At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, Harrison gives Houston another big body opposite Nico Collins, a two-time Pro Bowler listed at 6-4 and 222.

The Receiver Room Harrison Walks Into

Houston had to clear a roster spot the same afternoon the physical came back clean. The club waived wide receiver Jared Wayne, a 26-year-old former undrafted receiver from Pittsburgh. Wayne had four catches for 65 yards on 12 targets in five games this season, and 6 catches for 85 yards on 14 targets in nine career games. If he clears waivers, Houston is expected to try to keep him on the practice squad.

THE TEXANS PASS CATCHERS HARRISON JOINS

  • Nico Collins: The lead receiver, a two-time Pro Bowler who will keep the heaviest target share.
  • Tank Dell and Jayden Higgins: Dell has been back at practice after a knee layoff; Higgins is on injured reserve, which is the hole Harrison is being asked to fill now.
  • Xavier Hutchinson, Jaylin Noel, Kayshon Boutte: The next tier, with Boutte already added in an August trade from New England.

Ryans said after the Titans game that Harrison should arrive on Monday and that the staff would try to get him ready in a hurry, using the shared history with Stroud to shorten the learning curve. The physical is done. The next problem is snaps, not paperwork.

Frequently Asked Questions

When Does Houston Decide on Harrison’s Fifth-Year Option?

The Texans must decide after this season, for the 2028 year, on the fifth-year option that comes with his 2024 rookie contract. The four-year deal runs through 2027. If Houston picks the option up, that year is added at the price the league sets for his slot and playing time; if it declines, he heads toward free agency after 2027.

Which Other Cardinals Wide Receivers Were Top-Five Picks?

Harrison is the third wide receiver in Cardinals history taken in the top five, after Larry Fitzgerald (third overall in 2004) and Ahmad Rashad (fourth overall in 1972). Fitzgerald stayed and became the franchise’s signature player. Rashad was gone from Arizona by 1974, the last time the club had moved a top-five receiver this early in a career.

What College Awards Did Marvin Harrison Jr. Win?

He won the 2023 Biletnikoff Award as the country’s top receiver and was a unanimous All-American in both 2022 and 2023. He also won Big Ten Most Valuable Player and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in 2023 after leading the conference in yards, yards per catch, and touchdowns.

Who Is Marvin Harrison Jr.’s Father?

His father is Hall of Fame receiver Marvin Harrison, who starred for the Indianapolis Colts from 1996 to 2008. That history is why the Colts kept coming up as a rumor destination while Arizona shopped him. He did not go to Indianapolis. He went to the other AFC South club that already employs his college quarterback.
