Chiefs Reach 4-0 After a Win That Thinned the Receivers

Kansas City is 4-0 after beating the Raiders 30-27, but Tyquan Thornton’s dislocated ankle and Rashee Rice’s hamstring leave the bye looking like a roster problem.

Kenneth Walker III scored twice in 19 seconds, and the Kansas City Chiefs left Allegiant Stadium at 4-0 after a 30-27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 4. The drive that flipped the game ended with Tyquan Thornton on a cart, Rashee Rice already in the locker room, and Patrick Mahomes at 15 of 30.

Kansas City is the last unbeaten team in the AFC West and in the AFC. The Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers are also 4-0. The cost of this one sits in the receiver room, which is why the bye is not a victory lap.

Two Touchdowns in 19 Seconds Put Kansas City at 4-0

Walker finished with 22 carries for 177 yards and two scores, plus one catch for 2 yards. His 76-yard run at the end of a scoreless third quarter, the longest rush in the NFL this season, put Kansas City at the Las Vegas 8. Taron Johnson ran him down from behind. Two plays later Mahomes hit Thornton for an 8-yard touchdown and a 17-13 lead, the first points the Raiders’ defense had allowed in the fourth quarter this season.

Matt Gay answered from 44 yards at 11:17, then from 48 yards at 4:53, and Las Vegas led 19-17. Mahomes then found Thornton on third-and-5 from Kansas City’s 40 for 55 yards to the 5, with 3:35 on the clock. Walker walked in from the 2 at 3:21 for 23-19. The two-point pass sailed high and left of Walker.

The Raiders coughed up the kickoff. Linebacker Jeffrey Bassa punched the ball out of Dareke Young’s hands as he crossed the 20, and Jack Cochrane recovered with 3:10 left. Walker went around right end on the next snap for a 22-yard dive at the pylon and a 30-19 lead, his second touchdown in 19 seconds.

THE LAST QUARTER IN LAS VEGAS

  1. End of the third: Walker’s 76-yard run dies at the 8. Score 13-10, Raiders.
  2. Early fourth: Mahomes to Thornton, 8 yards. Chiefs 17-13.
  3. 11:17: Gay from 44. Chiefs 17-16.
  4. 4:53: Gay from 48. Raiders 19-17.
  5. 3:35 to 3:21: Thornton’s 55-yard catch, then Walker from the 2. Chiefs 23-19 after a failed two-point try.
  6. 3:10: Kickoff fumble, Walker from 22 yards. Chiefs 30-19.
  7. 1:46: Kirk Cousins to Brock Bowers for 20 yards, then a two-point throw to Cody White. Chiefs 30-27.
  8. Final snap: Xavier Nwankpa intercepts Cousins after an illegal shift the Chiefs declined.

Cousins threw for 365 yards and two scores, ending a seven-game winning streak that included his last four starts with Atlanta in 2025. Bowers, playing through an illness, caught six passes for 86 yards and the late touchdown. Las Vegas ran for 72 yards at 2.8 per carry. After Xavier Worthy fell on the onside kick, the Raiders got the ball back at their own 1 with 1:16 left, reached midfield, and turned it over.

Thornton’s 55-Yard Catch Ends With a Cart

Thornton had the best game of his career before he left it: five catches, 111 yards, two touchdowns. Rookie free safety Treydan Stukes tackled him from behind on the 55-yarder and came down on Thornton’s left foot and ankle. Thornton pointed, stood on his right leg, then went back down when he saw the way the left foot was pointing. Players from both teams knelt while the staff put the leg in an air cast and rolled him off. Ian Rapoport said he was carted off with a serious ankle injury during the best game of his career.

Team doctors put a dislocated left ankle back in place. The club lists him out indefinitely, with a full evaluation and a second opinion set for Monday morning. He left the locker room on crutches, in good spirits, and flew home on the team charter.

It sucks that he hurt his ankle on that play, but it was a big play for us. It helped us go get the win. It’s tough because those guys put in so much work. I was in that spot last year. One play can change your season.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs quarterback, postgame at Allegiant Stadium

Andy Reid put it in fewer words. “That doesn’t look good,” the coach said, calling Thornton a leader in the receiver group. Reid also said Rice “tweaked” his right hamstring on a 7-yard catch in the first quarter and was held out as a precaution after a long talk with trainer Rick Burkholder. Rice tried to stay in. He did not return.

Through four weeks, Rice and Thornton had been Kansas City’s most productive wideouts, combining for 24 catches on 31 targets, 409 yards, and three touchdowns. Thornton had led the team in targets of 20-plus yards last season as well. He posted that he will be back stronger.

Walker Already Owns the Chiefs’ Early Rushing Record

The Super Bowl LX MVP signed with Kansas City on March 9 on a three-year, $43.05 million contract that guarantees $28.7 million and can reach $45 million. Seattle had just won the title 29-13 over New England, with Walker running for 135 yards and taking the game MVP, the first running back so honored since Terrell Davis. Kansas City had gone 6-11 in 2025. The running game needed a lead back. It got one.

Walker now leads the NFL with 537 rushing yards, 41 ahead of Buffalo’s James Cook at 496. He has 87 carries at 6.2 yards each, four rushing scores, 12 catches for 84 yards, and two receiving scores. Those 537 yards are a Chiefs record for Weeks 1 through 4. The last NFL back to sit in that neighborhood through four games was DeMarco Murray, who had 534 in 2014 and now coaches Kansas City’s running backs.

WALKER’S FIRST FOUR GAMES IN KANSAS CITY

Week Opponent Carries Yards Rush TDs
1 Broncos 23 173 1
2 Colts 24 117 0
3 Dolphins 18 70 1
4 Raiders 22 177 2
Total 87 537 4

He had 1,050 rushing yards in 2022 as a Seahawks rookie and 1,027 on 221 carries in 2025, when he played all 17 games in a timeshare. Kansas City is handing him 25 touches a night, and he has not lost since Nov. 23, a 14-game streak that started in Seattle. Multiple scores in three of four Chiefs games is the job they paid for. With Thornton out indefinitely and Rice limited, it is also the job the passing game now leans on.

Why Mahomes Needed the Run Game in Las Vegas

Mahomes is 7-0 at Allegiant Stadium, six wins over the Raiders plus Super Bowl LVIII, and this was his 99th regular-season victory. Reid is 7-1 in the building, which opened in 2020, and he passed former Raiders coaches Josh McDaniels and Antonio Pierce for the most wins there. Before kickoff Reid had waved the trivia off. “I didn’t know that, and I don’t really care,” he said.

The night itself was not clean. Mahomes completed 15 of 30 for 225 yards and the two scores to Thornton. Las Vegas lived in the backfield with a four-man rush for most of the second half. Kansas City managed 18 yards in the third quarter before Walker’s 76-yard break. Travis Kelce’s first catch was the 1,095th of his career, moving him past Tim Brown’s 1,094 for seventh all time. He finished with 1,096. Cris Carter (1,101) and Marvin Harrison (1,102) are next. The tight end is still a marker. He is not a deep threat, and the two men who were went to the locker room.

Worthy recovered the onside kick and will be asked to hold the perimeter with Jalen Royals and whoever else Reid trusts after the break. The offense that just went 4-0 did it with a 50 percent night from Mahomes and a running back who is already past some franchise names through four games.

Kubiak Wiped Three Points and Lost by Three

Las Vegas is 3-1. First-year coach Klint Kubiak told CBS at halftime, “We’re winning. We’re going to win the game.” He came out of the locker room and took points off the board. Gay had made a 41-yard field goal on the opening possession of the second half, which would have made it 16-10. Kansas City was flagged for illegal formation. Kubiak accepted the penalty, turning fourth-and-7 into fourth-and-2 at the Chiefs’ 18 with 11:41 left in the third and the score still 13-10. Cousins’ pass to Ashton Jeanty was broken up by Drue Tranquill. Turnover on downs.

KUBIAK’S THREE CALLS

  • The wipe: He took a made 41-yarder off the board to go for it on fourth-and-2 and got nothing.
  • The kick: On fourth-and-2 later, trailing 17-16, he sent Gay out from 48 and took a 19-17 lead with 4:53 left.
  • The last snap: He could not get the play in, drew an illegal shift (declined), and Cousins was intercepted.

“I took three points off the board, and we were going to be aggressive going into the game. I don’t regret it. I regret not getting it,” Kubiak said of the third-quarter try. On the later kick he said he “fell short the first time” and “wanted to get points.” Kansas City then scored 13 unanswered to reach 30-19. After the final interception he did not hide. “Total missed opportunity. So I blew it,” he said. Cousins, thinking about a delay-of-game that might have let them reset, said, “Who cares about 5 yards? We got to get in the right play.” Maxx Crosby said the locker room still backs the coach “100 million percent.” The Raiders Week 4 game hub posted the Kubiak and Cousins pressers beside the 30-27 final.

The Bye Now Includes a Tyreek Hill Question

Kansas City is off next weekend, then hosts the 0-4 Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 18. Las Vegas visits New England. The AFC West now reads Chiefs 4-0, Raiders 3-1, Denver 2-2, Chargers 0-4. The bye is the first open date in which Reid’s staff has to answer a receiver shortage it did not have at kickoff.

Even before Rice and Thornton left the game, a team source said of Tyreek Hill and agent Drew Rosenhaus, “we’ve remained in contact.” Hill, 32, scored 62 touchdowns in six seasons in Kansas City before the 2022 trade to Miami. The Dolphins released him in February after a dislocated left knee and multiple torn ligaments, including the ACL, in Week 4 of 2025. He has been posting route work and is aiming at a November return. Mahomes said a reunion “would be pretty cool.” Kelce said, “That’s out of my hands, but I know I’d love to have ‘The Cheetah’ back in this building.” Chris Jones was blunter: “I hope we do. It’d be dangerous.”

The outreach was already in motion. Sunday made it louder. A one-word Hill post after Thornton went down was read as a wink, but the football problem is simpler than nostalgia. Kansas City cannot wait until November if Thornton’s ankle keeps him out and Rice cannot run. Walker can carry a month. He cannot invent a deep ball.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • Thornton: Dislocated left ankle, reduced, out indefinitely, evaluation Monday.
  • Rice: Right hamstring, out of this game, described by Reid as a tweak held as a precaution.
  • Hill: Free agent, November target, Chiefs in contact with Rosenhaus before and after the game.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Thornton’s calendar: No public MRI result, no injured-reserve designation yet.
  • Rice’s next game: No official week-to-week tag beyond Reid’s precaution note.
  • A Hill signing: Interest and contact, not terms, not a physical, not a date.

Walker just ran for 177 yards in a building Mahomes does not lose in, and Kansas City is 4-0 heading into a free week. The next time they dress, the question is who lines up outside Kelce, and whether the 4-0 record still has a passing game attached to it.

Stories here state currencies, units and time zones explicitly, name the country a law or a company belongs to, and explain local context rather than treating it as known.
